There is a beautiful idea that gets passed around in wellness circles. It goes something like this: your true self is already perfect and whole, simply waiting beneath the surface. Do the work long enough and you will uncover it. Peel back the layers. Reveal what was always there.
There is wisdom in that idea and and I have spent years inside it myself.
But after twenty years of working with people, I have come to see it a little differently. I do not believe life is only about uncovering who we are. I believe it is also about becoming who we are.
The potential may already exist. The person does not.
An acorn contains the possibility of an oak tree, but no one mistakes an acorn for an oak tree. A tea bag contains everything needed to become tea, but sitting dry on a counter, it is not tea. Not yet. Potential and realization are not the same thing.
A glacier does not reveal a valley. It creates one. Over centuries, it grinds against stone with unimaginable patience and unimaginable force. The bedrock does not simply contain a hidden valley waiting to be uncovered. The valley comes into existence through the work itself, through pressure, through friction, through movement. What emerges could not have existed without the grinding.
If the glacier feels too vast to be personal, consider that simple cup of tea. A tea bag sits quietly, filled with possibility. Everything it needs is already inside. Then comes the hot water. The heat does not reveal the tea. It transforms potential into something real. The color deepens, the aroma emerges, the flavor develops. Without the water, the tea remains only a possibility.
Life works much the same way.
Each of us arrives carrying possibilities: courage, compassion, wisdom, patience, strength. But those qualities rarely appear fully formed. They are developed, tested, and earned. The difficult seasons of life are often the hot water. The heartbreak, the uncertainty, the failures, the disappointments, the losses, the moments when we want to quit but choose to continue. The difficulty is not incidental to the process. The difficulty is the process.
This is what I have watched happen to people over many years of working alongside them. Not an uncovering. A transformation.
The person who shows up after a brutal day and stays present when every instinct says leave, who chooses to pause and breathe when every habit says react, who returns again and again when progress feels invisible. That is the grinding. That is the hot water. That is the practice.
And over time, something remarkable happens. Not because they found a hidden version of themselves, but because they became someone who did not exist before. Someone wiser, calmer, more resilient, more capable of meeting life exactly as it is.
Which means nothing you have been through has been wasted. Not the hard years, the mistakes, the heartbreak, the uncertainty, or the struggles you thought would break you. All of it was the water. All of it was the grinding. All of it was making you.
The tea does not exist without the heat. The valley does not exist without the glacier. The oak tree does not exist without the seasons. And the person you are becoming does not exist without the experiences that shape you.
Keep going. Not to find yourself. To finish becoming yourself.
