Having a “3-repeat” genotype for the MAO-A gene means possessing the low-activity variant of the Monoamine Oxidase A enzyme (commonly referred to as MAOA-L) (Sun et al., 2020). When a report notes “3 homozygosities” (or homozygous 3R), it means that across the relevant genetic markers tested, you carry two copies of this lower-expressing allele (e.g., if you are female, as the MAO-A gene resides on the X chromosome) (Deckert et al., 1999; Kolla & Bortolato, 2020).

Understanding how this genotype influences neurotransmitters provides clear direction on how to manage the associated anxiety using both natural and pharmaceutical approaches.
