America did not begin as a perfect nation, but it did begin as a nation that openly recognized its dependence upon God. From the earliest colonial settlements to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, faith played a central role in shaping the beliefs, values, and principles that would become the foundation of the United States. The men who built this nation were not all theologians, nor did they agree on every point of doctrine. However, they overwhelmingly understood that liberty, morality, and self-government could not survive without a strong moral foundation. Many Americans are told that faith should be separated entirely from public life.
