In a previous post I mentioned that I ocassionally create maps using the GeoJSON format, but that for simple maps that need to be done quickly I’d use the {csmaps} package which contains some neatly packaged maps in an easy to use format. However, I rarely use that method myself anymore. Instead, I’ve moved to using a more robust method. It is also slightly more advanced than the pre-wrangled dataframes from {csmaps}. Since the other post has gotten a fair bit of traffic, I’d take that as a sign that this is an issue people are solving often, so today I’d like to over an alternative way to plot maps of Norway (or any other country or region) using a slightly more advanced way using a format that is commonly available. In this post we’ll go through how to create maps in (ggplot2) using the GeoJSON, shapefile, GeoPackage
The GeoJSON and GeoPackage formats have their own websites: geojson.org and geopackage.org
, and geodatabase format.
