Building an SLO guitar overdrive pedal - Part 2

We left off part 1 waiting on a couple of parts—a single resistor that I forgot to add to the original part order, and some DIP sockets for the IC ’s that I didn’t think I needed initially. Now those parts are here I can finish the pedal! First job is to finish soldering up the board by adding the final resistor and the DIP sockets: Final parts soldered to the board Once I had that done I cleaned…

Building an SLO guitar overdrive pedal - Part 1

I love building things, and I love playing instruments. I’ve recently been getting more into guitar and guitar pedals, and I now have a small number of them. A friend of mine loaned me his DIY SLO pedal based on PedalPCB’s Lead Solder Overdrive PCB and I liked it that I decided to build my own. The first thing I needed to do was to order all the parts. I grabbed the build instructions from…

Eclipse 2024

On August 11, 1999, myself and a couple of friends took a trip down to Cornwall to get in the path of totality for the eclipse that was happening in the UK that day. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side and we had wall to wall clouds which meant that we could actually see anything. We did experience totality which was an awesome and eerie experience. This year, I knew about the eclipse…

Aurora drum cover

I’ve been wanting to record this for a while. This is my cover of “Aurora” by Foo Fighters. Recorded as a tribute to the amazing Taylor Hawkins. “Aurora” was apparently Taylor’s favourite Foo Fighters song. From Classic Rock World : “I’d say without a doubt, it would be ‘Aurora,” says Hawkins, adding, “I think it’s really, I love that side of Dave. I love it when Dave gets into his voice almost…

New hosting

After years of hosting this blog on Netlify , I’ve decided to finally move it to my Dokku server hosted with Linode . Don’t get me wrong Netlify is great, but I realised I wanted a bit more control over my own hosting and Dokku gives me that. I’d like to spin up a Gemini site at some point in the future and hosting on my own server should make that much easier. After playing around with various…

Coronavirus is still a thing

COVID-19 is raging out of control (especially in the US, but don’t think you’re better off in Britain; they are third on the list), but you wouldn’t know it by listening to the government. New York City is in “phase 3” of re-opening, which included limited re-opening of restaurants (although this has since been reversed). The reality is that COVID-19 does not give a shit about government…

Plasmatron Shader

I’ve been interested in computer graphics for as long as I can remember. The reason I started programming at all was because I wanted to make things happen on the screen. Recently I’ve been playing around with fragment shaders. Fragment shaders are tiny programs that run on the GPU and compute the colour of individual pixels (fragments). They do this incredibly quickly because the GPU has a large…

Racism and Taking Action

#blackouttuesday The murder of George Floyd has sparked outrage across America and the rest of the world, and rightly so. The death of so many members of the black community at the hands of the US police is horrifying and utterly heartbreaking. That this has happened against the backdrop of a global pandemic just makes things worse. I want to do more than just talk about my outrage on social…

Heartbreaker drum cover

I recorded a video of me playing “Heartbreaker” by Led Zeppelin. Hope you enjoy it!

Music.app on Catalina is a disaster. How did Apple manage to replace iTunes with something worse ?

Setting up a local resolver on macOS

For a good number of years I was using Basecamp’s Pow for local web development and one of my favourite features was the in built local DNS resolver that meant that *.dev would resolve to 127.0.0.1 . This mean that I had a unique hostname for every site I was building and running locally which I have found incredibly useful. Unfortunately Pow no longer sees active development (the GitHub repo has…

The web without the web

Laura González : In elevating frontend to the land of Serious Code we have not just made things incredibly over-engineered but we have also set fire to all the ladders that we used to get up here in the first place.

Browsers are pretty good at loading pages, it turns out

Carter Sande : The <a> tag is one of the most important building blocks of the Internet. It lets you create a hyperlink: a piece of text, usually colored blue, that you can use to go to a new page. When you click on a hyperlink, your web browser downloads the new page from the server and displays it on the screen. Most web browsers also store the pages you previously visited so you can quickly go…

Take better selfies

Aanand Prasad We ignore the effects of unchecked masculinity on us at huge cost. It’s poisoning us quietly, from youth through adulthood, stifling us, making us both harmed and harmful. It’s on us to end this, and it starts with radical self-love. Let’s be beautiful and vulnerable together.

The loudness of American airports

Duncan Davidson As soon as you arrive in the United States from overseas, people are yelling at you. First, they’re telling you which queues to use depending on which passport you have. Somehow, the printed signage doesn’t suffice, though I have a hard time believing that uniformed officers quickly barking orders at people is of much use to a foreign-language speaker.

Brompton World Championship USA 2019

The Brompton World Championship USA heat took place at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, New York. I shot a video of the race from a GoPro mounted to the front of my Brompton. I managed to place 22nd overall and 12th in the men under 50 category.

I M Sad That The Apple In Ear Headphones Have Been Discontinued

I’m sad that the Apple In-Ear Headphones have been discontinued. They were an overlooked gem. Amazing sound quality for the price.

Chess and Recursion: Part 1

I’ve been using my investment time at thoughtbot to build a multiplayer chess game using Elixir and Phoenix in order to hone my skills in that area. One of the trickiest and most fun parts of the project so far has been generating all the possible moves for a player to make. The board We will store the board as a map of pieces indexed by their position as a tuple. This makes it easy to move pieces…
