We have so many members of our hopeful community in 96 countries, that I occasionally like to highlight hopeful things happening in some of those countries. Today we feature Malta and its citizens who are also members of the DDH community.
People are finding real reasons across Malta for hope, especially in the way that communities are coming together to support each other, to protect nature and to build a more sustainable future.1 Here are some of them:
Many are pushing for greater protection of the bottlenose dolphins around Malta. Those groups are forming a coalition made up of diver operators, marine businesses and NGOs. They are highlighting how noise and boat traffic are stressing these animals. Ordinary citizens and businesses are choosing to be led by science and responsible tourism and are also demanding that laws that protect dolphins be enforced. That’s a powerful sign that Maltese society cares deeply about its marine heritage and is willing to act.2
Malta’s Social Climate Plan has been endorsed by the European Commission. That move unlocks €60.6 million to support cleaner transport, improve energy efficiency, and help vulnerable households with the cost of living. The plan’s goal is to make homes more energy‑efficient and transport cleaner, while cushioning those most affected by rising costs, which gives families tangible hope that life can become more affordable and sustainable.
The Civil Society Fund, youth initiatives, and national events bring people together to serve their communities. There’s a clear sense that people can make a difference by joining forces. That includes training for volunteer managers, support for NGOs after storm damage and festivals that celebrate inclusion. This network of local groups offers a practical way to contribute, for anyone who feels overwhelmed by big problems.3
The National Integration Support Centre in Malta helps migrants access employment, legal and social support, all in one place. All the while, the Ukrainian community in Malta continues to organize and support one another, showing how newcomers are building lives and contributing to society. These efforts reflect a hopeful story of solidarity that a small island can find ways to welcome and integrate people fleeing war and hardship.
In the first quarter of 2025, Malta recorded the highest economic growth among EU member states. This growth points to a resilient economy and potential for jobs and opportunity. This growth may not solve every issue but it does create space for investment in public services, infrastructure and social programs that can improve daily life.
