A Promise to the Earth

Blue and green crayons will be in high demand across classrooms everywhere, and kids might learn about recycling, turning off the water when they brush their teeth and maybe even be invited to a weekend litter pickup event on school grounds or at a local park.

The mainstream media might have a special spot about the way local kids or companies are taking part in local cleanup efforts, businesses might put their environmental commitments front and center on their website, and some politicians might even remind us that it is the responsibility of “every American” to do their part in combatting climate change.

And then it will be April 23, and “business” will go back to usual.

Last year, I wrote about how a single day is not enough, and that instead every day should be Earth Day. You can check out the embedded link below if you’d like a look back at that post.

A Day Isn't Enough

·

April 22, 2025

Have you noticed that there’s a day for everything lately? Some are…

This year, I want to revisit the concept of extending our celebration and make that work even easier.

Because right now, we need easy.

I’m not going to bring up “all the things” that fill our hearts and heads right now. If you know, you know. And if you’re reading this, you know.

For many of us, if we cannot fully champion all that we care about at Level 11 all the time, we feel guilty. We feel like failures.

But something does not need to be perfect to be good or to be worthy of doing.

When I get caught up in feeling like I will never be able to do enough, I find that it is best to speak to myself as if I were speaking to my own child.

When I want to accomplish something huge, if I begin to get overwhelmed, I try to remind myself to break it down into its smallest part.

And when I want to “keep going” at something important for longer than a day, I know I need to make it manageable.

This is why this year, I am making a promise to the Earth.

This promise is not a resolution. It isn’t flashy. And some people might think it isn’t “enough.” It’s simple, and that is intentional.

It’s also written easy enough that a child can understand it. (In fact, I made a mini-coloring book for kids with these exact phrases.)

I came up with six ideas for promises, and I will list them below. I hope you will choose one tomorrow and make a promise too. Maybe if you like them, you will share the phrases with your loved ones and start a new family tradition.

Earth Day Promises (Pick just one.)

  • Take your time.

  • Notice the small things.

  • Play every day.

  • Always stay curious.

  • Love all creatures.

  • Be kind to the Earth.

Small actions matter, often more than we realize.

Which one will you choose this year? I’d love to hear below. Feel free to share any specifics (or not) if you would like.
