It’s a simple idea, but one that keeps asking more of us. Kindness shows up in small choices, and in our words and actions. In our thoughts. February, with its focus on love and connection, feels like a good time to notice where kindness is already at work in our lives and where we might want more.
Kindness is often misunderstood as softness or passivity, when in reality it takes attention and courage. It asks us to slow down long enough to notice the people in front of us and respond with care rather than reflex. In a world that rewards speed and certainty, kindness chooses another path.
Kindness does not require grand gestures. It lives in everyday thoughtfulness: a softened message, a patient pause, a willingness to listen. These moments rarely feel dramatic, but they accumulate. Over time, they shape relationships and set a tone that others can sense and may be inspired to perpetuate.
Kindness also includes how we speak to ourselves. Many of us are far more generous with grace toward others than we are toward our own mistakes. Practicing kindness inwardly helps sustain kindness outwardly. One supports the other. Something to remember.
Choosing kindness does not mean avoiding hard truths or difficult conversations. It means approaching them with care and respect. Kindness can hold honesty and boundaries without turning harsh or dismissive. Is it truly kind NOT to say the difficult things?
When we treat kindness as a practice rather than a personality trait, it becomes something we can grow. Some days it comes easily. Other days, not so much. Either way, it remains a language worth speaking, again and again.
Where have you noticed kindness making a difference, either given or received? What small, ordinary acts of kindness feel most natural to you? Are there places in your life where kindness toward yourself needs more room? How do you balance honesty and kindness in challenging conversations?
Three blog posts for you, all of them (more or less) involving kindness:
kindness counts–A discussion of kindness in all sorts of ways, even POLITICS. I don’t get political often on this platform, but I feel strongly about the kindness lens I use when voting. Click through to see what I mean. 🙂
self-care gift ideas to encourage and comfort–This one is all about gifts showcasing kindness and care. So many ideas.
the Tate Brothers series by Deb Goodman: charm, courage, and second chances–One way to be kind to yourself is to take time for a fun and playful book series. This one is lovely. (I simply MUST include something bookish!)
I’m phasing out my Something Splendid blog, but I still have a few more new posts to share. I’ll be continuing my regular musings on Substack moving forward.
Fondly,
Crysti
