Back in the roaring 1990s, I cofounded a magazine called Red Herring that became essential reading for Internet company founders, VC investors, and early adopters. The Wall Street Journal called it “the Bible of the Internet.”

To pull it off, we built an epic team of young, very smart, and fashionable editors, writers, and producers. A little-known fact I’m proud of — 24 of our tight-knit team coupled off and got married. Twelve marriages and 28 kids at last count — all because Chris Alden and I decided to start Red Herring in his parents’ garage in 1993. (Chris and the illustrious Daphne were one of those couples!)

One reality of the world we live in is that our work consumes so much of our time that it’s hard to meet people on a social level. Like at Red Herring, many of us end up finding new friends and love interests through work.
