Crown Refs · The CROWN REFS Playbook

“Take care of your body. It’s the only one you’ll officiate in.”

When officials talk about goals, the conversation almost always sounds the same.

🏀 “I want to work more varsity games.”

🏀 “I want a college conference.”

🏀 “I want playoff assignments.”

🏀 “I want to work a state championship.”

Those are all worthy goals.

But there’s one goal that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough…

Longevity.

Not just getting the next assignment—but earning the opportunity to keep serving the game for the next 10, 20, or even 30 years.

At Crown Refs, we believe longevity isn’t something that happens by accident.

It’s something you intentionally build.

The moment you stop viewing officiating as a transaction and start viewing it as a lifelong craft, your priorities begin to change.

You stop asking:

“How many games can I fit in this weekend?”

And start asking:

“What decisions today will allow me to still perform at a high level 20 years from now?”

Officials spend thousands of dollars attending camps.

We study mechanics.

We analyze film.

We practice signals.

We work on game management.

All incredibly valuable.

But none of those things matter if your body can’t keep up with the demands of the game.

If your movement declines…

If your recovery slows…

If your energy disappears…

Eventually your officiating follows.

The basket is still ten feet high.

The court is still ninety-four feet long.

The game keeps getting faster.

The question becomes:

Can your body continue to meet the demands of the game?

One thing that surprises many new members of Crown Refs is this:

Health and wellness sit at the very top of our priorities—even above officiating education.

Why?

Because every aspect of officiating improves when your health improves.

Better sleep improves decision-making.

Better nutrition improves energy.

Better mobility improves movement.

Better recovery improves consistency.

Better mental health improves communication and composure.

Health isn’t separate from officiating.

It’s the foundation that supports it.

That’s why you’ll hear us talk just as much about:

🥩 Organically sourced Whole foods

🏋️ Strength training

🚶 Daily movement

💧 Hydration

🧠 Mental wellness

😴 Sleep

📈 Recovery

…as you will block/charge plays or mechanics.

We’re not just trying to become better officials.

We’re trying to become healthier human beings who can continue serving the game for decades.

Longevity isn’t one habit.

It’s the accumulation of thousands of small decisions.

It looks like:

🏋️ Lifelong Strength Training

Muscle is one of the greatest predictors of health, independence, and performance as we age.

Strong legs improve movement.

A strong core improves posture.

Strong hips reduce injuries.

Strength isn’t just about lifting heavier weights.

It’s about staying capable.

🚶 Never Stop Moving

Movement shouldn’t begin and end with game day.

Walk.

Stretch.

Play.

Move.

Take the stairs.

Stay active year-round.

The officials who move well into their 50s, 60s, and beyond rarely spend months doing nothing between seasons.

Movement becomes part of their lifestyle.

🥩 Prioritize Whole Foods

Nutrition isn’t about perfection.

It’s about giving your body the fuel it needs to recover and perform.

Think:

  • Lean proteins

  • Fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Healthy fats

  • High-quality carbohydrates

  • Hydration

Your body doesn’t know whether you’re preparing for a conference final or sitting on the couch.

It simply responds to how you fuel it.

Recovery isn’t the absence of work.

Recovery is part of the work.

Prioritize:

  • Sleep

  • Mobility

  • Stretching

  • Active recovery

  • Rest days

  • Deload weeks

The officials who recover well often perform better for longer.

The physical side of officiating gets most of the attention.

The mental side deserves just as much.

Stress accumulates.

Negative self-talk accumulates.

Burnout accumulates.

Develop habits that allow you to reset.

Read.

Pray.

Meditate.

Spend time with family.

Laugh.

Disconnect.

A healthy official isn’t just physically fit.

They’re mentally resilient.

One of the biggest mistakes officials make is trying to maximize every weekend.

Instead…

Think in seasons.

Think in years.

Leave room for:

Recovery.

Family.

Vacation.

Strength training.

Sleep.

Sometimes the best assignment you’ll ever accept is the one you decline because it protects your long-term health.

We Asked the Crown Refs Community…

This week inside our Dialed In channel, we asked one simple question:

“What’s one thing you’re doing to improve your longevity as an official?”

The responses were outstanding.

Our members shared practical habits ranging from daily movement and mobility work to hydration, nutrition, recovery, stress management, corrective exercises, and building year-round fitness routines.

Their answers reinforce something we’ve believed for a long time:

These conversations happen every week inside the Crown Refs Community, where officials from around the country challenge one another to become better—not only as referees, but as healthier, stronger, and more resilient people.

Final Thought

Your officiating career isn’t measured by one great game.

It’s measured by how long you can consistently perform at a high level while continuing to enjoy serving the game.

Think beyond this season.

Think beyond your next assignment.

Think beyond your next camp.

Think decades.

Because the goal isn’t simply to work basketball games.

The goal is to keep serving the game at a high level for as long as possible.

👑 Serve the Game.
