There are weekends that are fun. There are weekends that are productive. And then there are weekends that genuinely change people.
Year One of the Crown Refs Skill Development Camp was all of that — and more. It was fulfilling, transformational, and honestly… hard to put into words. Not because there wasn’t enough to say, but because there were so many layers that made it special.
From the jump, we centered the entire camp on three themes:
1) Character
2) Community
3) Education
And we did it in that order for a reason.
Because yes — everybody came for a skill development camp.
And yes — they got a skill development camp.
But my biggest goal was bigger than clock awareness, mechanics, and play calling.
I wanted every person who attended — camper and staff — to leave as a happier, healthier, stronger human being.
Character First: “Who you are” drives everything you do
Our first sessions focused on what creates a “happy winner” in life and on the floor:
kindness, humility, patience, positivity, emotional regulation, integrity, service, and leadership to name some.
We also didn’t shy away from the other side — the traits that silently break people down if left unchecked: the negative patterns, emotional habits, and internal narratives that sabotage growth.
Because here’s what we believe:
Officiating is one of the greatest character-building vehicles on earth.
It challenges your ego.
It tests your composure.
It exposes your emotional triggers.
It forces accountability.
It demands integrity even when nobody likes you in the moment.
And when you learn to handle that… you’re not just a better official — you become a better human.
That character foundation wasn’t just a “nice opening talk.” It set the tone for the entire weekend, and it created a map:
When your values and emotional makeup are dialed in, everything improves:
partnering and crew chemistry
mental toughness under pressure
handling mistakes and adversity
communication
conflict management
consistency
confidence
It’s all connected.
Our second theme was community — and this might have been the most powerful part of the entire camp.
Crown Refs has been building for eight years. We’ve connected online for a long time. But this weekend created something different: real-life chemistry.
There were so many long-awaited first meetups. So many handshakes that turned into hugs. So many “we finally made this happen” moments.
You could feel the appreciation in the building — from staff to campers. It wasn’t forced. It was genuine. It was relationship-building, vibe-building, positivity echoing through every game, every meeting, every break, every conversation.
And if you’ve ever been to an environment where people are competing while still rooting for each other… you know how rare that is.
That’s what this weekend was.
The third theme was education — the part everyone came for.
And I’m proud to say: we delivered.
There was so much teaching, layered in every direction:
classroom sessions
live games
on-court skill stations
postgame breakdowns
one-on-one coaching
crew feedback
We identified the major officiating skills and built the camp around them — then reinforced those skills through stations, presentations, and live reps.
This wasn’t “show up and work games.”
This was: show up and evolve.
One of the most valuable parts of the weekend was how intentional we were. These weren’t random drills — we built referee skill stations to isolate the exact tools that separate “good” from “grear,” and to give officials reps they could immediately apply in live action.
Here’s what we worked on:
🏀 Jump Ball Administration
Practice proper jump ball mechanics, player positioning, communication, toss technique, violation recognition, and transitioning smoothly into live-ball officiating.
✋ Signals & Reporting
Develop stronger, more believable signals and reporting mechanics. Focus on presentation, cadence, voice projection, reporting accuracy, and overall court presence.
🏃 Running & Movement
Learn efficient movement patterns, fluid running mechanics, and how to move with purpose instead of simply chasing the play.
👀 Positioning & Coverages
Understand primary coverage areas, responsibilities, rotations, referee-the-defense concepts, and how to consistently achieve the best look at plays.
⏰ Buzzer Beaters
Work through end-of-period situations including clock awareness, last-second shots, timing plays, communication, and proper administration of game-deciding scenarios.
⚡ Rapid Responses
Develop stronger coach communication, conflict resolution, and game management skills through realistic scenarios. Officials practice responding to coaches, controlling conversations, de-escalating tense situations, and delivering confident, professional responses under pressure.
🤝 Out of Bounds Help
Practice crew communication, primary and secondary responsibility, when to seek help, when to provide help, and how to get crucial out-of-bounds decisions correct as a team.
One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was the staff.
A lot of them were first-time camp instructors — but you wouldn’t have guessed it. The passion, the craftsmanship, the preparation, and the care they poured into campers was relentless.
They coached with a surgical mindset:
identifying micro areas of growth
delivering nuggets that mattered
tailoring feedback to the individual
teaching the crew as a whole
constructive feedback delivered with optimism
It was nonstop. Locked in. Purposeful.
You’re going to be seeing content from this staff for months — because what they taught was next level, and what they gave was from the heart.
This is only the beginning. We’re excited to expand the staff next year and add more key pieces who fit our positive culture and raise the ceiling even higher.
Verbal feedback is great — but we wanted campers to leave with something tangible.
So we used Referee AI in a powerful way:
voice-to-text feedback in real time
staff stayed focused on the game
feedback captured instantly when a teaching point came up
After each game, every official received an emailed report — organized into sections and categories — so they could review their performance clearly.
That meant each camper worked 5–6 games and received 5–6 detailed reports.
Turnstone gave us an incredible environment to build this camp.
Four courts. A great meeting room. Strong technology. A second-level viewing area. And most importantly — everything centralized.
No traveling. No scattered energy. No separation.
That “central hub” feeling matters when you’re building community, and Turnstone made that possible.

We also made a decision that most camps won’t:
We served real whole foods.
No fried food. No artificial food-like substances. No ultra-processed nonsense. No seed oils and additive-heavy meals that leave you feeling sluggish.
Because “Dialing In” your officiating also means dialing in your health.
In my Dialed In session, we reframed the core question:
Are you eating to satisfy your taste buds… or to optimize your healthspan?
Flavor or fuel?
We talked about:
ingredients to cut out or limit
nutrient-dense foods to prioritize
how to improve your emotional relationship with food
simple hacks and approaches officials can actually apply
Because your performance isn’t just mechanics and whistles.
It’s energy. It’s clarity. It’s mood. It’s recovery.
And all of that is health.
