This last October I joined the #theydrawtober challenge by They Draw1. The premise was really appealing as it was a mix and match of their 3 accounts that are about food, travel and garden. So I made my list:
In addition, before it started, Salli (the gorgeous one that drives the challenge) shared a post with the guidelines of her approach and one of them resonated with me. She calls them grids; I call them bits. This is something I’ve done for quite some time but lately I’ve been doing it less than I would like to so this was the perfect excuse.
As the challenge started, I understood why people prepare some posts ahead of the challenge… specially for weekends it was hard. So, one day I managed to make 4 posts and have some extra time to think, plan, etc.
I wanted to take it easy, remember this was for fun and for practice so when I came to a prompt that I didn’t feel like I decided to skip it instead of pushing it. Luckily, I only skipped 2!
My practice here was using limited color palettes, so the result was more impactful, doing more “bits” pieces and mixing some patterns and textures in them.
As I was doing the challenge I realized that coming up with a new color scheme for every piece on top of thinking the design was a lot, so I started picking color palettes2 that I’ve been saving for years. The less decisions you need to make the easier. This also made me use some new color palettes.

Thinking about possible uses for these pieces like portfolio pieces, pattern designs, surface design… I did some that relate in the same color way so I could use them together.
It came to an end, and I barely noticed. This was fun, joyful and useful!
To sum up I learned that reuse or repeat color schemes is okay, that also applies to layouts, fill spaces with textures and patterns to make it more interesting and faster and the wonkier the better! Here are my 9 favorite ones:
If you are thinking of joining a challenge3 I would say don’t be scared. It’s made to build community, share and have fun, if you can’t keep on the timing, it’s okay, next time you will plan ahead, if there’s something that doesn't quite align with you tweak it! Remember that the one who is doing the challenge is you, it should make sense to you.
