Achoo.

It’s been sleepy on these pages recently. Which has been a combination of a few things… being allergic to Olive Trees, a fact I handily discovered upon moving here, whilst living on the edge of one of the largest olive growing regions in the world during the blossom is a bit of a fucker, to be honest. I’ve been living some kind of pandemic rerun after the month of winter rain, masked up and wheezing like an asthmatic, popping those allegedly non drowsy anti histamines… so, a bit low on energy as a combined result, but there’s a whole heap worse at sea.

But my inactivity feels only partly related to that.

A number of weeks back I scribbled down a thought which made me pause and think and question the whole enterprise of this online dissident thing. And ever since, as I’ve let that digest and settled, it’s been hard to consume much of it or engage much in it, a few usual columns aside. The idea has also been powering a lot of background writing too, so I’ll get back to putting some of that pretty soon I should suspect. Once the bloody blossoms, which have at least all now fallen, clear off. They are currently congregating with intent in every nook and cranny available.

I’ve also got 5 or 6 new tracks ready for vocals, mix, master and out the door. Sadly, that too is also very much on hold due to the olive blossoms… well, I’m not above recording the odd scratch vocal, especially when I finally find a groove for lyrics published on here some months back…

Making music on your own is like corresponding with past and future selves. For me, this often means hacking together a rough song outline - dumping out ideas, breaking them down and finding how the pieces might fit together, as a compositional tool, the results of which become the basis of a more “performed” recording of the final version later.

So in the spirit of sharing something creative after such a period of absence, I thought, well, let’s put out a one time, substack only “demo” version of said breakthrough. This comes with a warts and all warning (I’m actually amazed I’ve even considered putting this out) - there was little thought to finished sound quality when sticking any of these tracks down - it was all a “don’t forget the idea” thing…

Back with more crap when the olive induced respiratory system swelling has calmed down - something clearly audible in the vocals above.
