The Black Luminaries : The Heartbeat of History
Astrologers often point to the cycles of the outer planets to describe periods of historical development. Yet these cycles themselves form part of a much larger pattern—one in which individual consciousness is called to interact with world consciousness, particularly at moments when society is challenged to reflect its highest ideals.
The concept of the Black Luminaries originated in France in the early 20th century with the noted astrologer Dom Neroman (Pierre Rougié). They consist of the Black Moon at the lunar apogee—both Mean and True—and its polarity point, Priapus. The other Black Luminary is the Black Sun at the aphelion, together with its polarity point, the Diamond.
French astrologer Jean Carteret later interpreted the dialectical interaction of these points within the context of the post-structuralist and symbolic astrology that developed during the 1960s and 1970s. He also collaborated with Dutch astrologer George Bode in establishing Structural Astrology. Through this work, Bode discovered that key turning points in history have often been marked by alignments between the Black Luminaries and the Lunar Nodal Cross.
The Black Moon, Priapus, Black Sun, and Diamond can each be understood as symbolising different aspects of consciousness—an idea that resonates strongly with developments in 21st-century culture, particularly in fields such as the quantum sciences, where the role of consciousness is increasingly being integrated into scientific models.
The phases of this larger cycle are marked by conjunctions between the four points of the Lunar Nodal Cross and the four points of the Black Luminaries. The prelude to the current cycle began in March 2020, with its first stage unfolding in September 2024.
In this talk, Charlotte will explain the factors behind this powerful pattern and explore the larger cycle that may justly be called the heartbeat of history.

From her discovery of astrology at 15, U.S. – born Charlotte Wenner received a certificate as Astrological Counsellor in the Netherlands in 2001. She studied Structural Astrology with George Bode in 2006-2008, and has lectured, taught, and published on this method internationally. She worked for 10 years as an
instructor in an accredited 4-year astrology program. She is currently in her final year of the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David. Charlotte has published articles in ‘The Mountain Astrologer’ and Dutch astrology journals, and C*I*A’s Timelords Magazine and in 2023 published her first book,
