A gentle flash fiction

I only wished to find a gift for Greta. Now, I’m not sure where I am.
The steps, canals, the narrow streets… all blur into a kind of maze.
At least it is cool here. This little inlet, the water lapping on the stone… here, there is shade between the cloistered columns.
I shall rest. Not until nightfall, for then I shall truly be lost - cutpurses carry knives in these parts - but just enough to find some sort of bearing.
