The buffet table ran the hall’s full length, and it was laden with riches: fresh lettuce, sweet tomatoes, glistening mushrooms...

The hot section: hissing sausages, and a cauldron of coral-coloured soup.

But dessert held the real treasures. There were frosted vanilla cupcakes. There was a black forest gateau with mirror glazing and a cherry on top. There were bouncy castle jellies in every colour of the rainbow.

Izzy piled her plate high.
