Sirens wail out of sync. This was no drill. This was chaos.
The air in the station hall is hot and humid with human breath. A sharp smell of burning batteries stings his nostrils.
Elias kneels behind an overturned vending drone, its plastic shell slick from the crush of sweaty bodies that shoved it over.
“Eyes on me,” he says, low and steady. “Breathe in … slow … through your nose.”
He holds Mara’s small body tight against his chest, feeling the quick, thin flutter of her heart through his jacket.
Her inhale is a gasp. Her exhale trembles. Screens on every wall hang black. A guidance prompts frozen mid-sentence: “Don’t pan_”. An unfinished final command, useless without the AI system behind it.
The sound changes. The random shouting and screaming becomes a low, animal moan.
Someone slams into the kiosk from the other side, sending the kiosk edge into his ribs.
Mara flinches.
“It’s alright,” Elias murmurs. “We’re here, we’re still.”
He counts her breaths: two, three—too fast. He puts her hand on his chest. Follow my breathing. He matches her rhythm and then slows it.
A man barrels past, eyes glassy, lips moving in half-phrases as if still reciting from a feed that’s no longer there.
The pressure of bodies pushes around the kiosk, eddies of movement threatening to pull them in. Elias grips the side panel with one hand, Mara’s shoulder with the other. Her nails dig into his sleeve.
“You remember the beach?” he asks suddenly, leaning close enough she can’t miss the words. “Last summer … the low tide, when we walked out past the pier. The sand warm under our feet?”
Her brow knits, eyes flicking in tiny, searching movements. As if waiting for the memory overlay to bloom across her lens. But the blackout has left nothing there. Only the dark space where the image—and feeling—should be.
Her breath quickens again.
A crash—glass shattering somewhere above. A panicked scream pierces the noise and fractures it into chaos. The crowd’s movement changes from surging to thrashing, bodies colliding with no path, no exit.
The air smells of sweat, metal, smoke.
Mara’s breathing spikes again. Elias cups her face, forcing her gaze back to his.
“You said the water was—”
Her head shakes in tiny, frantic jerks. “I don’t know. I can’t …”
Someone trips and falls against the kiosk, pitching them forward into the open. The sightline to the crowd is sudden, overwhelming: hundreds of faces in every direction, eyes glassy, jaws clenched, moving like a single, convulsing, roaring river.
Mara freezes, caught in its pull. Her eyes go wide and pupils flood black. Her breath turns to short, shallow pants.
“Stay with me,” Elias says, but her gaze is past him now, fixed on the swarm.
The mob surges, catching her shoulder. She stumbles forward; he grabs for her jacket but the force rips her from his grip.
She turns once, eyes wild, and then the crowd folds around her, absorbing her into its wave.
Elias lunges after her, shoving into the press of bodies. His training kicks in—shoulder through, low stance, eyes locked on her hair ahead. The mob swells sideways, folding in on itself. Hands slam against him, heels slice into his shins. He gains half a meter, then gets pushed sideways two.
The swarm is too dense. Mara is swept further away with every heartbeat.
Overhead, the screens flicker once, dim, and stay dead. He roars her name, but the noise swallows it whole.

By 2035, over 80 percent of the population used AI implants every day. These implants helped them see information, remember things, make decisions, and even stay calm. Over time, people relied on them so much that their own brain activity slowed. Many could not remember well, focus for long, or start a thought without the AI. The remaining 12 percent, called the Thinker Corps, had no implants. They trained their minds through philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, meditation, breathwork, and long periods of deep work. They served as human anchors and guides in a world run mostly by AI systems.
In February 2040, a major blackout, caused by a chain of failures in Earth-orbit satellites, cut off implant access for forty-three minutes in several large cities. Without their AI “support,” much of the population fell into what doctors later called a limbic cascade: fear rising fast, clear thinking collapsing, and panic spreading from person to person. Within ninety seconds, thousands lost control and moved in confused, swarm-like waves. The behavior looked like a mass panic disorder and was later known as the Attention Apocalypse. The final death toll exceeded 30,000.
After the blackout, the Thinker Corps required new “AI-off” training drills to help people rebuild basic mental strength. But fewer than 4 percent of civilians took part. Without regular practice, experts warned that any future loss of AI signals could push untrained groups into the same panic within two minutes.
