Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally altered modern warfare. The recent attacks on Russian airbases serves as an acute demonstration that technology is no longer merely a tool but a potent weapon, a critical battleground, and increasingly, a key determinant of global power.
At the heart of this transformation lies the unprecedented scale and sophistication of low-cost drone deployment and the burgeoning integration of artificial intelligence. Many commentators characterise this conflict as a "drone war," where unmanned systems have become pivotal to military operations, reshaping everything from frontline tactics to strategic strikes deep behind enemy lines.
Over the weekend of 1 June 2025, the Ukrainian drone strikes on multiple Russian airbases represented a significant evolution in Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities. These actions carry notable implications for the war's trajectory and the future direction of conflict more broadly.
Operation Spider Web (Pavutyna), orchestrated by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), was a "daring and technically sophisticated mission deep inside Russian territory," as described by United24 Media. It involved strikes on at least four, possibly five, Russian airfields housing strategic bombers. What made this operation particularly striking was its methodology and reach. The SBU reportedly smuggled FPV drones deep into Russian territory, concealing them in custom-built wooden cabins mounted on trucks. These "Trojan Trucks" drove near the airbases, from which drones then launched remotely from concealed compartments.
This method allowed inexpensive FPV drones, typically used for short-range tactical missions (5-25 km range), to strike targets thousands of kilometres from the front lines. Belaya Airbase, for instance, lies over 4,500 km from Ukraine's border. The SBU claimed 41 Russian aircraft were hit in this coordinated attack, with sources suggesting ten were completely destroyed. Satellite images appeared to confirm damage or destruction to multiple strategic bombers, including Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 aircraft.
The operation was years in the making, requiring 18 months of preparation. Ukraine utilised artificial intelligence in the drones to ensure "pinpoint accuracy." Drones trained with AI in Poltava to recognise and strike aircraft in ways that would maximise destruction, indicating they "knew" their targets. This use of AI potentially allowed the FPV drones to overcome electronic warfare, a significant challenge on the front lines.
The SBU claimed the impact was substantial, estimating $7 billion in damage and asserting that 34% of Russia's strategic cruise missile carriers at main airfields were disabled. These aircraft are high-value, sophisticated, and notably, many are effectively irreplaceable, with the last Tu-22M3 manufactured in 1993 and no current production for Tu-95 or Tu-160 bombers. President Zelenskyy hailed the operation as "absolutely brilliant," resulting in "significant losses — entirely justified and deserved."
Beyond the material damage, the psychological impact of striking strategic assets deep within Russia, thousands of kilometres from the front, is profound. It demonstrated Ukraine's evolving long-range strike capability and sends a clear message: crucial Russian assets, previously thought safe, are now vulnerable. The timing of the strikes, ahead of potential peace talks and coinciding with Russia's Air and Space Force day, added a symbolic layer to the operation.
This operation underscores the asymmetric potential of drone technology, enabling a nation with more limited resources to strike its adversary's critical, high-cost infrastructure using relatively inexpensive means. It also highlights a growing "deception gap," where countries like my home country, Australia, traditionally relying on strategic distance, may be falling behind foes in understanding and employing deception in modern warfare, now intertwined with technologies like drones and AI.
