Petrina Engelke · Climate Culinarians

Dear Climate Culinarians,

Happy New Year! Let’s switch roles for this issue: I’d like you to tell me what’s on your mind. Not the other way ‘round.

I have 7 quick questions for you. If you’d care to answer them - or just some of them - you’d help me a great deal to shape this newsletter. Because … I’m not sure how to continue.

Do the 7 question survey

I’ve been writing to you about food, climate change, and how surprisingly often the two become entangled. I’ve been talking to smart people about chili peppers and heat or about edible seaweed guzzling up carbon dioxide or what global warming does to maple syrup. I’ve been pondering solutions. Hard questions. And then I reported back to you. Is it worth it?

I don’t know.

I do know that

  • I love diving into food systems and eco systems, doing interviews, mulling over research, writing drafts, editing, designing a newsletter …

  • Okay, there are tedious parts where “love” seems unrealistic. I love most of the work related to this newsletter.

  • I believe I’m making myself useful.

  • All this takes more time than I’d like to admit.

I guess I just did.

Taking care of Climate Culinarians is time-consuming. A Greek chorus in my mind says it’s time I must use to earn my keep. Not to keep a small group of readers happy. Do you even know they are happy with this?, they say.

This way to the survey!

So there. Help me quiet those voices in my mind. One way or another. If you’re survey-averse, perhaps you want to leave a comment?

And just so you know: I don’t necessarily listen to the voice of reason when it comes to passion projects. But I’d love - love! - to listen to you.

Read, eat, repeat!
Petrina
