Ignoring that the economy is in the shitter, that it's bad enough with rising gas prices because of his creative war with Iran, and that Canada is an ally, Donald Trump has started a trade war with our neighbor to the north.
Trump posted to Truth Social early Sunday morning, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!”
I have been to Canada, and I assure you, they do not want to be a part of the United States. If you ever want a lecture, tell a Canadian that technically he is an American. It's like the time in Edinburgh, while waiting for a taxi outside a pub to take me back to my hotel, an elderly smoking Scot informed me angrily that I should never call him a Brit. And I didn't, or even ask.
If Trump has an issue with our trade agreement with Canada, then he needs to take it up with the loser who negotiated our current deal, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Of course, that person was Donald Trump. He tossed out NAFTA during his first term and negotiated this deal, which is another fine example that you cannot trust Donald Trump.
I don't understand why Trump has a problem with that deal since he is the one who negotiated it, and he does claim to be the world's greatest dealmaker. But instead, he is now imposing 50% tariffs on all Canadian goods, which is in violation of our trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had been in negotiations with the US but called them off last Saturday, saying, “They asked too much and offered too little.” One of Trump's demands was that Canada change its French-language and cultural protection laws, which require bilingual packaging.
Canadian and Quebec officials forcefully rejected those demands, arguing that language and culture are non-negotiable. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette stated, "Our culture, our language is central to our identity, and it is important to exclude that from the negotiation table." Carney and Quebec Finance Minister Éric Girard backed the decision to walk away, asserting that the US cannot dictate Canadian domestic cultural policy.
Can Donald Trump be any bigger of a xenophobic dick? Actually, I believe he can. When you purchase a product made in another nation, don’t the label and instructions usually include English? Trump barely stopped short of demanding that everyone in Quebec learn and speak English exclusively.
On Saturday, Carney pretty much said his nation was not going to eat Trump’s shit and that his country would implement retaliatory tariffs on the United States starting on September 8.
During a press conference, Carney said that Canada would “match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.” Trump, on the other hand, is making economic decisions that will not just hurt Canadians but also American workers, farmers, families and businesses.
While other nations have cowered in fear and played along to get along, Carney is refusing to be bullied, and his nation is overwhelmingly supporting him. He said, “We will not allow any nation to determine our future.”
Trump insulted Carney and Canada’s sovereignty earlier this year, writing on Truth Social, “I’m working with Governor Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan) on trying to save The Great Lakes from the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp, which is rapidly taking over Lake Michigan, and all of the beautiful surrounds.”
“I’ll be asking other Governors to join into this fight, including those of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New York and, of course, the future Governor of Canada, Mark Carney, who I know will be happy to contribute to this worthy cause,” he trolled because he’s a dick. MAGAts love him for it.
Canadian author Stephen March wrote for The New York Times, “The American president clearly did not know whom he was dealing with. He is following in the grand tradition of American leaders starting wars with people they don’t understand, then wondering what went wrong.”
Of course, he didn't know who he was dealing with, and totally underestimated the situation, just like he did by creating a war with Iran. Even after being told that they would close the Strait of Hormuz if he started a war with them, Trump plowed ahead anyway out of ignorance. The man is a moron, and stupid enough to believe and follow Benjamin Netanyahu's lead. But this time, Trump started a trade war with an American ally and our closest neighbor.
The good news for Canada is that tomorrow is Taco Tuesday, and Trump is likely to taco out as he has done so many other times before. The bad news for Trump, other than his 33% approval rating and that he is only above water in three (Wyoming, West Virginia, and Idaho), is that other nations may follow Carney's lead and refuse to be bullied by the bully.
There are 71 days left until the midterms.
