This week, I did a live drawing session on Twitch for the first time! I will be doing this again. It was kind of a test run, to make sure that I could get all the technology to cooperate, and it seemed to be successful in that regard! Here’s my drawing…

One of the true wonders of the digital age is the sheer quantity of pose reference material available - I have a number of old pose books for artists, but finding reference is no longer a matter of combing through dusty bookshelves and neglected art book sections of bookstores, hoping to find something that was both usable and didn’t cost a fortune.
Mainly, I just wanted to have a quick pose to work from, and I’d intended to do a cartoonier version of the figure. However, like the digital drawing novice I am, I did my layout sketch on the layer with this photo, so it was a matter of sticking to the source material or press the undo button about 500 times and starting all over. Ah well…
Anyways, this drawing is surely not a revelation or anything, but it is a drawing, and therefore I can make a post with it! Now, Twitch isn’t the ideal place to do live videos from my view - most good drawing reference photos feature nude models, and even artistic nudity is something that is getting harder and harder to showcase online. So at least for figure work, I’d ordinarily be working with au naturel photos, but I don’t want to piss off our corporate overlords this quickly. But since the point is just to do some live drawing that people can watch along to on their TV or device of choice, I can live with it.
Aside from Twitch, it seems Substack is working on rolling out a live video thingy, and we’ll see how that goes, but for now Twitch is it. I’m aiming to go live every Tuesday night at 9:30 PM, but I know that’s late for some folks, so I’ll schedule some re-runs throughout the week if you want to scope it out without any interactive element. Once I get more comfortable with the medium and the tools, I’ll likely branch out into more than drawing from poses.
Weirdly enough, I’m pretty stoked about this. A lot of us grew up watching a dude blow through landscape paintings in what seemed like hyperspeed on our local PBS affiliate. So, to me, this is the right kind of fan art. Rather than aping his work, I’m going to ape how he shared his work with the world, but with my own.
