More garden visits to report back from in this week’s diary. I honestly don’t think there has been a year where I have seen more gardens, it’s been incredible. Thank goodness, I’m off on holiday for a week this Thursday, and I’m not planning to see ANY gardens at all during that week, so I should return with batteries fully charged.
It’s the Magical Gardens event around Tetbury today so I’m up early to walk the dogs before heading off down to Rodmarton with my gardening friend and neighbour Sheila. This biennial event is quite something, with 20 private gardens to see over two days. We can only do one day and I want to pack in as many gardens as I can. Apart from Rodmarton, which is always inspiring, there were two out of the five gardens we managed to get round that really stood out.
Easton Grey is rarely open to the public, so it was a real treat to see it, not least for its magical setting in its own valley overlooking a tributary of the River Avon. The drive winds through sheep pastures and suddenly you come across the 18th-century house clad in the most prolific wisteria I’ve ever seen. ‘You’d need a cherry picker to prune that,’ says Sheila, craning her head to see if the fronds have made it up to the roof. They have. Immediately around the house there is little planting apart from a box parterre and a single wide herbaceous border - but the view needs nothing else. The real gardening takes place in the traditional walled garden behind the house, which is looking incredible, flowers, fruit and vegetables all immaculately grown with not a weed in sight. We wonder who will end up eating all this amazing produce.
