If you’re living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), you’ve probably heard countless lists of foods to avoid. Less sodium. Less processed food. Watch your potassium. Limit phosphorus.
While those recommendations can be important, there’s another side of kidney nutrition that doesn’t get nearly enough attention:
What should you eat to help protect your kidneys?
The exciting news is that nutrition science isn’t just identifying harmful foods—it is also uncovering foods that may actively support kidney health.
Today, let’s look at three foods with strong scientific evidence showing they may help slow CKD progression by targeting the underlying processes that damage the kidneys.
CKD isn’t simply about declining kidney function.
Three major biological processes drive disease progression:
Chronic inflammation
Oxidative stress (damage caused by unstable molecules that “wear down” kidney cells)
Accumulation of uremic toxins, many of which are produced by unhealthy gut bacteria
The foods below each target one or more of these mechanisms.
Extra virgin olive oil has long been associated with heart health, but recent evidence suggests it may also help protect the kidneys.
A 2026 meta-analysis involving more than 1,000 people with CKD found that individuals following a Mediterranean-style diet that included high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil experienced:
Slower decline in kidney function
Lower inflammation
Lower blood urea levels
Better body composition
The greatest benefits were observed in people with early to moderate CKD, particularly those receiving conservative (non-dialysis) treatment.
Polyphenols are natural plant compounds with powerful biological effects:
Antioxidant activity
Anti-inflammatory effects
Cardiovascular protection
Kidney protection
These compounds help reduce the oxidative stress that contributes to kidney damage over time.
Not every olive oil contains high levels of protective polyphenols.
Look for bottles that are:
Dark glass
Cold-pressed
Early harvest
Labeled as high polyphenol, rich in polyphenols, or phenolic-rich
These oils often have:
A stronger flavor
Slight bitterness
Peppery sensation in the throat
Greenish color
Many also have acidity between 0.3% and 0.5%, although acidity alone doesn’t determine polyphenol content.
Around 2–3 tablespoons per day is generally used in Mediterranean dietary patterns.
To preserve the beneficial compounds, use it mainly raw, such as on salads or vegetables.
Broccoli is much more than a source of vitamins.
When you chop or chew broccoli, it produces sulforaphane, one of the most extensively studied plant compounds for cellular protection.
Sulforaphane activates a protective pathway inside our cells called Nrf2, which turns on the body’s own antioxidant defense system.
Think of it as flipping on your cells’ internal repair mechanism.
A 2024 clinical study involving people with CKD found that sulforaphane supplementation:
Activated protective antioxidant pathways
Improved glucose regulation
Reduced phosphorus levels
Lowered triglycerides
These findings suggest sulforaphane may help counter some of the metabolic disturbances commonly seen in CKD.
To obtain the most sulforaphane:
Choose broccoli sprouts when available (they can contain several times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli)
Chop broccoli and let it sit for several minutes before cooking
Steam for about 3–4 minutes
Adding a small pinch of mustard powder after cooking may further increase sulforaphane formation
Other cruciferous vegetables also provide benefits, including:
Cabbage
Brussels sprouts
Cauliflower
Kale
One of the biggest discoveries in kidney research over the past decade is the importance of the gut-kidney axis.
Many harmful compounds that damage the kidneys are actually produced by bacteria living in the intestine.
When harmful bacteria dominate, they produce uremic toxins such as p-cresyl sulfate, which enter the bloodstream and place additional stress on the kidneys.
Resistant starch helps change that balance.
Unlike regular starch, resistant starch isn’t digested in the small intestine.
Instead, it reaches the large intestine, where it feeds beneficial bacteria.
These bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids that help maintain a healthier intestinal environment while reducing the production of kidney-damaging toxins.
A 2024 clinical trial involving people with CKD receiving conservative treatment found that 16 weeks of resistant starch significantly reduced blood levels of p-cresyl sulfate, one of the major uremic toxins associated with kidney disease progression.
You don’t need expensive supplements.
Many everyday foods naturally provide resistant starch, especially after cooking and cooling:
Green bananas or green banana flour
Cooked and cooled potatoes
Cooked and cooled sweet potatoes
Cooked and cooled yams
Cooked and cooled rice
Beans
Lentils
Oats
Cooling these foods changes part of their starch into resistant starch through a process called retrogradation.
Kidney nutrition shouldn’t only focus on restriction.
It should also focus on adding foods that support the body’s natural defense systems.
These three foods work through different biological pathways:
