In a former life when I was a corporate Recruiter, my team was tasked with the responsibility of hiring 100 technologists in 100 days. The business called it “100 in 100”. We pulled together and made it happen. It wasn’t easy, and I’ll admit some corners in our process were cut.

For a CHRO in a private equity portfolio company (a “CHROPE”), few milestones are as exhilarating as experiencing hypergrowth. It's a testament to a company's success, a validation of its product and service, and a beacon of bright prospects. However, with this rapid expansion comes a unique set of challenges, particularly in the realm of recruitment. Balancing the need for efficiency in hiring processes with the preservation and nurturing of company culture is a delicate dance, but it's one that can make or break a hypergrowth phase.

Hypergrowth is more than just a spike in revenue or an uptick in customers. It's a phase characterized by exponential expansion, driven by factors such as sudden market demand, a breakthrough product, or substantial investment. This explosive growth necessitates a substantial increase in workforce to meet escalating operational demands.

Yes there is a need for swift Recruitment, but be wary of the perils of rushed hiring.

There is a very good chance that the culture you’ve created will face dilution and erosion, as you invariably lower recruitment standards in favor of speed. There is a real risk of escalated turnover and mis-hires. There will be incredible strain on your onboarding and HRIS teams.

Things you should consider as you face a rapid uptick in Recruiting and Onboarding:

·        Leverage technology to streamline processes for efficient screening and decision making

·        Implement agile and collaborative hiring teams

·        Define and articulate cultural fit criteria across hiring processes

·        Incorporate cultural assessments into interview processes

Remember, leadership sets the tone and provides the framework for navigating hypergrowth while safeguarding the company's culture.

Successfully managing hypergrowth while preserving and nurturing company culture is an art that requires strategic thinking, adaptability, and a commitment from all levels of the organization. When executed thoughtfully, it can lead to sustained growth and a thriving organizational culture that sets the foundation for long-term success. Remember, it's not just about growing fast—it's about growing smart.
