78. BEHIND THE DESIGN-- WORX DOWNTWON BIRMINGHAM

For years, WORX Birmingham has provided entrepreneurs, creatives, and growing businesses with thoughtfully designed coworking environments that blend flexibility, professionalism, and community. As Christopher Architecture & Interiors’ sister company, it is a natural extension of that same commitment to creating spaces where people thrive. WORX has become a destination for professionals seeking more than a traditional office. Today, with successful locations off Lakeshore and in Vestavia, the company is preparing to open its third Birmingham location inside the historic Armour & Co. building downtown.

While an official opening date has not yet been announced, we’re excited to offer a first look behind the design.

The newest WORX location will bring the company’s signature coworking experience to downtown Birmingham, offering private offices, coworking memberships, conference spaces, and amenities designed to support businesses at every stage of growth. WORX was created around a simple philosophy: provide flexible workspace solutions while fostering a genuine sense of community and belonging.

Nestled within Armour & Co., one of Birmingham’s most significant adaptive reuse projects, the new location occupies a space rich with history. Originally constructed in the early 1900s as a meat-processing facility, the building has been carefully restored while preserving its historic brick, timber, and steel elements. Today, those original materials provide the backdrop for a completely new chapter.

For the design team, the challenge was creating a workplace that felt modern and efficient without competing with the character of the building itself. The solution was found in contrast.

Warm wood ceilings meet crisp white walls. Historic brick sits alongside sleek glass partitions. Open collaborative areas are balanced by private offices designed for focused work. Throughout the space, natural textures and architectural details create a sense of permanence often missing from conventional office environments.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project is how the architecture remains the focal point. Original brick walls, exposed structure, and reclaimed materials provide an authenticity that cannot be manufactured. Rather than hiding the building’s history, the design celebrates it.

The conference rooms were intentionally designed to feel less corporate and more conversational. Private offices offer quiet focus while maintaining a visual connection to the larger community. Glass storefront-style partitions allow natural light to travel throughout the space, creating openness without sacrificing privacy.

As more professionals seek flexibility in how and where they work, spaces like WORX continue to redefine the workplace experience. The Armour & Co. location reflects that evolution, combining historic character, modern functionality, and a strong sense of community within one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings.
