Last weekend, I wrote a short story for the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge. It’s an international creative writing challenge that forces you to write a thousand-word story using an assigned genre, setting, and object in 48 hours or less. There’s an entry fee, but there are cash prizes for the winners.
Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been in submission limbo, and writing short stories has been a nice way to stretch my creative muscles while achieving the satisfying buzz of completing a project.
To my surprise, when it came to the flash fiction challenge, I gleefully hit the submit button well ahead of the 48-hour deadline.
An article on Jane Friedman’s website, by Elizabeth Sims, 20 Reasons Why Everybody Should Write Short Stories has even more reasons to give short story writing a try.
And if you want to truly blow your mind, read some winning microfiction (100 words or less) stories.
