The Observer Effect in Pull Discovery

Have you ever seen a stranger using a product and immediately thought, “Wait, what is that?” Not because someone told you about it. Not because an algorithm served it to you. But because you watched someone doing something with their body or their behavior that didn’t match your mental model of how things work, and your brain couldn’t let it go.

That moment of observation is one of the most under appreciated forces in customer research. It bypasses every filter a customer has built up against marketing. There’s no pitch to evaluate, no ad to dismiss, no review to weigh. There’s just behavior that doesn’t fit, and a question that demands an answer.

Romeo lives in Cleveland, Ohio. He’d owned a Trek bicycle for about two years and rode it on weekends in the park, mostly for leisure and to lose some weight. It was a pleasant routine. He enjoyed it.

One Saturday afternoon in January, Romeo was riding in the park when he noticed something that didn’t make sense. A man on a bike was moving at a good pace, but he wasn’t pedaling. The bike was just going.

“I noticed the person wasn’t pedaling,” Romeo told us, “so I figured out it was a trick bike.”

Romeo rode up to the man and asked about it. The stranger was friendly. He told Romeo it was a Ride1Up 700 series, an electric bike. He showed Romeo the LCD display on the handlebars: battery percentage, distance covered. He talked about the charge time (four to five hours), the reliability, the price (about $1,000). Romeo noticed the thicker tires, the front and rear lights.

But what mattered most wasn’t the specs. It was what the encounter did to Romeo’s thinking. Before that moment, Romeo had never considered an electric bike. His Trek was for weekend leisure. Biking was something you did in the park. The idea of biking to work had never crossed his mind.

“Previously I was just content with riding my manual bike for leisure,” he said. “I never thought of getting an electric bike for commuting.”

That single encounter in the park shifted the entire frame. A bike wasn’t just a weekend toy anymore. It was transportation. It was a way to get to work and back. The stranger on the bike wasn’t selling anything. He was just riding. And that was more persuasive than any ad Romeo had seen in his life.

Romeo typed the model into his phone notes on the spot. That evening, at dinner with his wife, he pulled out his phone and started researching. Google first (to verify the price and see what it looked like), then YouTube, where he watched three videos over about 30 to 45 minutes: an assembly walkthrough, a test drive, and a brake test. He read the YouTube comments. Most were positive. People mentioned the comfortable saddle, which mattered because his Trek seat hurt. One person complained about the handlebars wobbling. Another mentioned the weight. Romeo actually saw the weight as an advantage, because it would give the bike more stability on rougher terrain.

The next day he told his wife. She asked, “Do you really want this?” He said yes. She was supportive, and part of her comfort came from the fact that he’d actually seen the bike in person. This wasn’t an impulse purchase from scrolling online. He’d touched it. He’d watched it move. He’d talked to a real person who owned it.

But he couldn’t buy immediately. At about $1,000, he needed to save. He opened the Mint app, looked at his expenses, and started cutting: subscriptions, fast food, eating out. About a month and a half later, by the end of February, the money was there. He bought it new on eBay, picked the lowest priced listing, checked the seller’s reviews, and paid with a credit card.

Assembly was harder than expected. He got stuck on the spokes and tires, called a handy friend, and they finished it together the next afternoon in about an hour and a half. He rode it down the street before the battery was even fully charged.

“I felt very nostalgic,” he said. “I felt like I was a kid again. Down the streets, the breeze in my face.”

By Monday, he was riding it to work. “There’s a different feeling when you’re driving a car, and when you’re riding a bike,” he told us. “When you’re riding a bike, you tend to notice a whole lot of things. You notice the dog walking by the sidewalk. You feel much more alive.”

An Observer Effect in Pull Discovery occurs when a customer discovers a product not through marketing, search, or word of mouth, but through direct observation of someone else’s behavior. The observation creates pull not because of what the product is, but because of what it allows someone to do that the customer didn’t know was possible.

In Romeo’s case, the man in the park wasn’t evangelizing electric bikes. He was just riding one. But the visible gap between what Romeo expected (pedaling) and what he saw (not pedaling) created a cognitive disruption that no advertisement could replicate. It forced Romeo to ask a question, and that question opened a category he’d never considered.

This matters because most pull research focuses on verbal channels: recommendations, reviews, social proof. But observational pull is fundamentally different. It doesn’t require the customer to be looking for anything. It doesn’t require the product owner to be selling anything. It just requires a visible behavior difference that violates the observer’s expectations. And once that expectation is violated, the customer does the rest of the work themselves.
