This week’s research points to a recurring challenge: the quality of action depends on how well we understand the systems we are trying to change. The studies show that incomplete knowledge can distort priorities—whether because species shifts go undetected, ecological diversity remains undocumented, people misjudge the carbon impact of their choices, or cities lack the institutional capacity to translate circular-economy ambitions into practice.

Together, these studies invite us to think about regeneration not simply as a question of doing more, but of seeing, measuring and governing more effectively—so that interventions respond to ecological realities, actual climate impacts and local institutional conditions.

This article highlights new global evidence that climate change is reshaping where butterflies can survive. Drawing on data covering 1,758 species across 105 countries, researchers found that roughly one in ten butterfly species worldwide has shifted its geographic range, with climate change and extreme weather emerging as the dominant drivers alongside agriculture and habitat loss.

The findings position butterflies as sensitive indicators of broader ecological disruption: some species are rapidly expanding into new territories, while others are losing substantial portions of their habitats. The study also exposes major monitoring gaps in biodiversity hotspots such as Central Africa, Southeast Asia and the Amazon, underscoring the need for stronger global biodiversity monitoring and citizen science to detect ecological change before losses become irreversible.

This article highlights an unprecedented effort to catalogue insect diversity across a 10,000-hectare patch of the central Amazon. Using vertically stacked traps from the forest floor to the canopy, intensive collecting methods and large-scale DNA barcoding, researchers have gathered 5.5 million specimens and estimate that this single location alone could contain more than 40,000 insect species—many likely new to science.

The project reveals how little is still known about the biological complexity of tropical forests, particularly in previously under-sampled canopy habitats. With hundreds of taxonomists working to identify and describe the species, the research underscores a central conservation challenge: habitat destruction and climate change may be affecting thousands of organisms before scientists even know they exist, making comprehensive biodiversity inventories increasingly urgent.

This article highlights new research on why people often misjudge the climate impact of their everyday choices. Drawing on a study of nearly 3,000 participants and 32 individual climate actions, researchers found that people tend to overestimate relatively low-impact behaviors such as recycling and teleworking while underestimating higher-impact choices such as avoiding air travel, reducing car use and switching to renewable electricity.

The study identifies two key psychological mechanisms behind these errors: the availability heuristic, which makes familiar and frequently discussed actions seem more effective, and motivated reasoning, which leads people to assign greater value to behaviors they already practice. Published in Nature Sustainability, the findings suggest that improving “carbon competence” will require more targeted climate communication rather than one-size-fits-all messaging, helping people distinguish between symbolic environmental actions and those capable of delivering substantially greater emissions reductions.

This article argues that building circular cities requires more than physical infrastructure: it also depends on the “soft” capacities of governance, participation, planning and institutional cooperation. Distinguishing hard urban regeneration—such as buildings, mobility infrastructure and physical renewal—from soft regeneration, the article develops a framework centred on multi-level governance, administrative capacity, knowledge sharing and participatory planning.

Using Portugal’s National Circular Cities Initiative (InC2) as a case, the study shows how networks between municipalities can support circular-economy transitions through joint action planning, peer learning and the exchange of practices around water, construction, waste and urban–rural relations. While the initiative’s long-term impacts remain too early to assess, the article argues that these less visible institutional capabilities are essential for translating circular-city ambitions into effective and locally adapted urban transformation.
