Most learners know 这个 (zhège) as the demonstrative pronoun meaning “this”, as in 这个人 (”this person”) or 这个苹果 (”this apple”). However, 这个 also has another common use in spoken Chinese: it can be placed before a noun to emphasize the speaker’s attitude toward someone or something.
In this pattern, 这个 does not simply identify an object. Instead, it highlights how the speaker views the person or thing, often adding emotion such as annoyance, admiration, affection, or criticism. Compared with a normal noun phrase, using 这个 makes the statement sound stronger and more expressive.
Structure:
Subject + 这个 + Category
Example: 他这个老师很负责。He's the kind of teacher who is very responsible.
Here, 这个 adds emphasis rather than simply pointing out the noun.
Because 个 is a measure word, it can be replaced with other classifiers such as 种 or 类 when talking about a type or category.
Name-Calling with 你这个…
A very common use of this pattern is in insults or playful teasing. In these cases, 这个 strengthens the speaker's judgment of the person.
Structure:
你这个 + Noun
Example: 你这个骗子！You liar!
This pattern is usually rude, although close friends may sometimes use it jokingly.
这个手机真不错。This phone is really good.
我不喜欢这类电影。I don't like this kind of movie.
你这个坏蛋！You bad guy!
昨天我们公司来了一个新经理。大家都说他经验丰富，可是第一次开会的时候，他不停地批评别人，从来不听大家的意见。散会以后，同事小王忍不住小声说：
“你这个经理，连员工的话都不愿意听，怎么能带好团队？”
虽然他说得有点冲动，但不少人心里都有同样的想法。
后来，经理慢慢改变了自己的态度，开始认真听取员工的建议，也愿意承认自己的错误。几个月以后，公司里的气氛好了很多。小王笑着说：
“看来我当初对你这个经理的看法太片面了。”
大家都笑了，经理也没有生气，而是感谢大家一直以来的帮助。

听取 (tīngqǔ): to listen to; to hear and consider (advice, opinions, suggestions)
片面 (piànmiàn): one-sided; partial; biased; incomplete (of a viewpoint)
Yesterday, our company got a new manager. Everyone said he was very experienced, but during his first meeting, he kept criticizing others and never listened to anyone’s opinions. After the meeting, our coworker Xiao Wang couldn’t help whispering:
“You manager! You won’t even listen to your employees. How can you lead a team like that?”
Although he spoke a bit impulsively, many people secretly felt the same way.
Later, the manager gradually changed his attitude. He began listening carefully to his employees’ suggestions and was willing to admit his own mistakes. A few months later, the atmosphere in the company had improved a lot. Xiao Wang smiled and said:
“It seems my opinion of you as a manager was too one-sided back then.”
Everyone laughed, and the manager wasn’t angry. Instead, he thanked everyone for all of their support.
