(July 29, Inner Mongolia) Construction of the Damao Banner–Baotou urban hydrogen transmission pipeline, a core project under the National Energy Administration’s first batch of hydrogen energy pilot initiatives, is approaching completion. The project is China’s first long-distance pure hydrogen pipeline and is expected to significantly reduce the cost of green hydrogen cost in Baotou’s heavy industrial sector once operational.
The pipeline extends approximately 195 kilometers from the first station at the Barun Industrial Park chemical industry cluster in the Bayan Obo mining district to the terminal station in Baotou’s Kundulun District. Running primarily from north to south, it passes through the Barun Industrial Park, the Bayan Obo mining district, the New Industrial Park, Guyang County, Urad Front Banner and Kundulun District.
The pipeline has a design pressure of 6.3 MPa, a diameter of DN457 and an annual hydrogen transmission capacity of 100,000 tonnes.
Once completed and commissioned, the project will provide a stable supply of industrial green hydrogen to Baotou’s steel, chemicals and other industrial sectors, supporting the low-carbon transformation of the city’s energy-intensive industries. It will also serve as a key hub in the regional hydrogen network and provide foundational infrastructure for the future transportation of green hydrogen to more distant markets, including the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region.
Baotou has excellent wind and solar resources, enabling green hydrogen production costs to fall as low as RMB 18 per kilogram ($2.67 per kg). At the same time, the city is a hub for steelmaking, metallurgy and chemicals, providing a broad range of potential hydrogen applications. The completion of the pipeline is therefore expected to substantially reduce the cost of green hydrogen consumption for downstream industrial users.
As a national-level pilot project, the pipeline will provide valuable engineering and operational experience in the construction, operation and maintenance of high-pressure pure hydrogen pipelines across complex terrain. It will also serve as an important demonstration project for the large-scale development of green hydrogen pipeline networks across China, accelerating the deployment of an integrated industrial model combining renewable hydrogen production, pipeline transportation and industrial consumption.
