Eat to the Beat documents what female-led bands eat on the road—craft services or lack thereof, the 2 a.m. drive-thru run, the one food that’s strictly off-limits in the van. For our first installment, writer Lily Guthrie (summer intern at Cherry Bombe, and image researcher at Saturday Night Live the rest of the year) talked to the band Momma, who performed this past weekend at Lollapalooza.
L.A.-born and New York-grown, Momma is an indie rock project from frontwomen Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman. Their latest album, Welcome to My Blue Sky, pairs steadfast melodies and clever hooks with themes of love, loss, and secrecy.

Lily: What’s banned from the bus?
Allegra: Etta and I have gotten in trouble for cracking open a bean dip…
Etta: …but bean dip is so good.
Lily: Is there a craft services hero item?
Allegra: 1. Anything that they decide to give us. 2. Ginger turmeric shots. 3. Mustard. We have sandwich ingredients on our rider, but they never give us condiments. So we’re eating dry sandwiches. But if there’s mustard… the whole thing can come together.
Lily: 2:00 AM drive-through order. Go.
Etta: Easy. It’s most likely going to be Taco Bell. I’ve been switching it up a little bit recently, but I’m just going to stick with my classic, which is a Spicy Potato Soft Taco and a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito. Keeping it simple.
Allegra: I do a Cheesy Gordita Crunch, and then I do a modified Crunchwrap Supreme where I just do beef, cheese, and add beans. Love, love beans.
Lily: Is there a hometown dish you’ve been craving?
Etta: Honestly, In-N-Out from L.A., always.
Allegra: I’ve had people say to my face that Whataburger is better and it’s laughable. In-N-Out is the best.
Lily: What was the last truly great meal you had, and where did you have it?
Allegra: Super Pollo in Ridgewood (Queens).
Etta: I love Super Pollo.
Allegra: It’s a full rotisserie chicken and you get rice, beans, plantains, a salad, then they have a green salsa you can put on everything. It’s like 50 bucks and it feeds at least three people. It’s so good.
Lily: If your sound were a food, what would it be?
Allegra: A cherry lollipop. Some sort of cherry hard candy.
Etta: Something that has a hard or spiky exterior but ultimately has a really sweet vibe. Like a dragonfruit.
