Have you ever visited The fountain of poetry? Toss in a penny And a poem pops out. If only it were so simple. I chase these poems As they play hide and seek Or sometimes tag They can be shy Sliding behind shady trees Slithering between rocks Avoiding light on a sunny day Delivering it at night. Is that the moon shining Or my latest poem Emerging from the lake Like the mermaid seldom seen? Words play in the shadows Romp across the fields Of my sleepy mind. The most potent of poems Write themselves At 3 a.m. When I would rather be sleeping. And when morning dawns Poems go back to sleep. The muse amuses herself With my frustration Toying with me Like a cat with a mouse And yet I am enamoured I call upon her every day And when I am lucky She comes out to play.
