September has always felt like a natural invitation to come home—to the kitchen, to the garden, to the harvest, and to the rhythms that sustained families long before grocery stores and next-day delivery.
For our September unit study, we are leaning fully into homesteading.
Not because I think our children need to abandon modern life and churn every ounce of butter they eat, but because I want them to understand where things come from.
I want them to know that an apple doesn’t begin in a produce aisle. Bread doesn’t begin in a plastic bag. Cheese isn’t simply something sliced and placed on a sandwich. Meat doesn’t originate beneath plastic wrap and fish shouldn’t come from a can.
There are trees, animals, microorganisms, soil, weather, geography, chemistry, human ingenuity and thousands of years of history behind the food on our tables.
And that is exactly why homesteading makes such a beautiful unschooling study.
One apple can lead us into botany, nutrition, American history, geography, economics, chemistry, cooking, measurement, art and literature.
One loaf of bread can take us around the world.
The goal isn’t to “cover” a curriculum.
The goal is to follow food backward—and see where curiosity takes us.
