For several years, CheckMyVote volunteers have been doing something remarkably straightforward: examining publicly available voter-registration data, identifying records that appear to warrant review, and sending those findings directly to local clerks across Michigan. The work is methodical, often tedious, and rarely glamorous. But every so often, a local official demonstrates exactly why this kind of citizen participation can matter.

Hastings Charter Township Clerk David Olson is one of those officials.

CheckMyVote founder Phani Mantravadi recently highlighted Olson after the clerk publicly asked federal officials for assistance verifying citizenship within his township’s voter rolls. Olson’s request follows allegations from Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf that a confidential informant inside the Michigan Secretary of State’s office raised concerns about how Michigan’s Customer and Automotive Records System, or CARS, interacts with automatic voter registration. Those allegations have now been referred for federal attention, but they have not yet been independently established as fact by Michigan officials or a court.

What makes Olson particularly noteworthy to CheckMyVote, however, is that our experience with his office began well before the current controversy.
