Funding Mechanisms Part 1

This write up will be about the some of funding mechanisms I have come across mainly from a perspective of new funding mechanisms.

Hopefully you will learn and stay curious and can spark the curiosity within you and myself to keep evolving this language and research, as I think these are transforming how the world trades and funds goods. We can make it stupid proof with intentional design.

Hopefully this will help illuminate how important and fascinating this work is.

This is a note I have from when I was at ethDenver in February of this year, the folks (such as Kevin Owocki, Griff Green, and hence their teachers Elinor Ostrom) who illuminate the world of funding, economic process, and how to see new models for providing funding to public goods. They develop language for these, and here mine.

Here we dive to my psyche,

If public goods are to satisfy shared values, then public discussion of what’s value matters.

So to coordinate between our groups to decide what is value to us collectively, at larger levels or coordination, especially through the internet, p2p protocols, can we start see what collectively matters for more people

governance behind collecting data to see what people care about, what is used, and what we would rather use, are very important to align ourselves

the discussion and narratives we believe in are almost more important than the voting itself, the voting is a way to ensure everyone has a voice and smaller narratives still get heard and aren’t muted.

more so we need to innovate on public goods, and the underlying mechanisms we want to support, creative positive sums, may not be monetary in the short term or at all, but making sure people and life has food water and shelter are very important narratives to pursue.

again just throwing this in, but creating systems where failure is accepted and understanding that it is still beneficial, and creating systems that can be modified in the future without collapse is very important. and setting initial conditions have long implications for things we may not understand when starting and working towards better understanding of complexity and the complexity we engage in.

of we think healthcare is a public good there is no reason food shouldn’t be as well. once you give someone medicine no one else can take that same medicine this means it is rivalrous, so we need to shift our thinking, and funding to support our food systems, soil health, and air quality to grow healthy plants so we can be healthy too!

public good to me are good stepping stone of quantifying the markets we need, but it doesn’t stop there we need to keep elaborating, with modern day economists, especially token creators and understating long term effects of certain starting systems, sustainability of markets, or to transition smoothly to new ways to create goods

The work of Kevin and Griff, respectively with their work in Gitcoin and Giveth, is so inspiring, leads to the header of the note.

A funding platform to connect people who want to fund people doing stuff like food fridges, coops, greenhouses, urban farming.

The ways we use these tools are developing right now to fund the hobbies and experiments of others, the value derived from something as a public good may be harder to quantify/measure. From the example of Gitcoin who works towards funding open source software, that provides value to a collective of us that want to keep information open.

I want to keep this shorter and let you dive in yourself!

  • How do we fund our basic needs?

  • How to have funds for experimentation?

  • We redistribute our resources for more symbiotic systems, feeding each other

seed money is place to fund gardens

use them and their network to try quadratic funding, with matching pools from donors and then another donor round for projects

they fund globally to individuals and to business

https://seedmoney.org/

can make defi plays, and use their liquidity to have stakeholder owned pools, and use that to fund more pools of matching,

Want to dive in on what I mean by “defi plays” if you are understanding that Decentralized finance is, how it will take over centralized finance, great, if not I will likely do a writeup/ link share of it a some point, stay tuned!

Defi enables the pooled value of money to be used in a variety of ways

  • Collateral

  • Can invest it in other commodities

  • Lending and borrowing

  • Can show growth of your sector or good/service

Are there pitfalls of making digital money, yes of course, if we base our worth on things that can mean nothing to us then we will likely collapse, but this enlightens a idea of basing some of our worth on public goods, such how clean our air or water is.

Imagine taking your bill for groceries for the year, est $100-$300 monthly in the US, and putting that into hyperlocal food production for the densely populated area, the pooled money from lets say 100 people, can now operate a facility with operating costs between $10,000 and 30,000 a month!! Woah the power of coordination!

Imagine a community garden, pooling their time and money to grow and be connected to their food, how wonderful a process, but only to realize more value for the great value it is. Again lets come together and find our narratives to make this world better!
