“Leave it to destiny”
“If it’s meant to be it will be”
Lines like these have always made me feel uncomfortable and furious.
What does it mean to “Leave something to destiny”???
Why do these lines make me feel so negative???
Ever since i started studying in elementary school i had this obsession and undying love towards superhero films which i still carry it to this day. Watching Spiderman swinging from the buildings , Thor being worthy to lift the hammer or Dr. Strange performing magic tricks….all these made me feel like maybe one day even i would be able to possess such superpowers and protect the world from the dark forces…not realizing that one day all these dreams of mine would be shattered.
BUT.
I recently realized that maybe we are not devoid of superpowers , we do possess a superpower.
The Power of Choice.
All of us unknowingly possess this superpower where we can actually make a choice as to whom do we love?? whether do we quit?? whether we would apologize or not??
These choices…These decisions slowly become a life which People later call…
DESTINY
I suppose i never liked this word or the way it was casually thrown in a conversation , whenever i saw people using sentences such as:
“If it’s meant to be, it will be.”
“Whatever is destined will happen.”
“Let’s leave it to fate.”
If everyone believed this …Would inventions exist??Would Businesses be built??Would relationships survive??
These lines just act as excuses for inaction.
I tried to conduct a thought experiment regarding this idea and something happened that actually baffled my mind.
I was speaking to one of my dearest friends where i gave this person a hypothetical scenario which went like…
Me: Imagine travelling twenty years into the future , you discover your marriage ended in a divorce.
Would you stop marrying that person knowing that the outcome would be so grueling??
Friend: NO. I would still choose them, but now i would try to communicate better…love better…avoid repeating the mistakes that lead to the divorce
Me: But Why??
Friend: Because knowing the future doesn’t remove the choice i have, it just gives you another opportunity to influence it.
This is where it clicked to me that no matter what are the challenges you face , no matter even if you know the ultimate outcome, YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE POWER OF MAKING A CHOICE.
Like most people even i was confused between 2 terms Fate and Destiny , finally after thinking about it enough i gave a simple 1 line definition to it:
Fate is the belief that the script has already been written.
Destiny is simply the name people give to the life we eventually create.
I now firmly believe that I am not changing my destiny , I am the One creating it.
Now most of you might have this one question…”What about the things we cannot control like accidents, loss , illness”
The only possible answer to this question i have is that maybe we don’t choose every circumstance we face but we always have the choice to choose our response towards it.
Let me give you an instance to prove that why i feel that destiny is something we create and not something which actually exists.
I never understood why people say “If we are meant to be , we will find our way back to each other”.
Relationships don’t survive because they were written in the stars. They survived because two people decided to choose each other again and again.
Love doesn’t grow because destiny decided it would. It grows because:
Someone chose to to call after an argument.
Someone chose to apologize instead of protecting their ego.
Someone chose to stay when leaving would be an easier option.
“Every lasting relationship is thousands of tiny choices disguised as one beautiful story”
At the end all i want to say is that i once wanted powers that never existed but now i possess a power which is far superior and sacred.
Choice.
Carrying your Superpower is the greatest responsibility one can ever take up , so be responsible as to how and when you choose to use this Superpower.
“Do not let the fear of tomorrow decide the choice you should make today”
