(Content Note: illness, death, and grief)
A new year, an world changing loss, and a time of fallow creativity. This update will be short and more than a little personal.
2024 was a tough year for many people and our family was not spared. It was very hard to get into the spirit of the holidays and look forward to the new year with everything that was going on. The health of both my maternal grandparents declined rapidly throughout 2024, to the point that they were both hospitalised. The prognosis for both of them was not good and in the very early hours of the morning on Friday the 3rd of January we lost my grandmother. It was relief, she was bedridden and in a lot of pain but thankfully, despite the nature of her illness and the associated pain, she was able to go peacefully in her sleep.
I’m doing alright. It was not an unexpected loss and I am grateful that she didn’t linger longer than she did. If you have watched a loved one whither away in a hospital bed, suffering and praying for the end, you will understand. It is a strange concoction the relief that their prayers have been answered and they are no longer suffering tempered with the bitter sorrow of their passing.
Anyway, I said this would be a short update and despite my desire to just keep waffling on about grief I will move on. I might allow myself to discuss it more when it is not so raw.
I know I will most likely be unable to write for a little bit while I process this loss and that will delay An Echo of Hope more than it has been delayed already. But I am allowing myself to follow my instincts in regard to my writing. I have said before that I am never going to be a “fast” writer; I honour my creative process and allow it to bloom however it sees fit. So I am expecting January to be fallow month on the creative front. Still I may be surprised and the words might come back faster than expected.
I hope the start to your new year has been lighter than mine and I will see you next month with another update even if it is just to say, the words aren’t back yet.
