One of you dolls left this comment for me:

I have straight, fine hair and I literally have about 1/3 of what I started with since I’ve been on Mounjaro for 16 months. I can’t afford the expensive products that are advertised. I would like to try Nutrafol, but the cost adds up quickly! I’m on 2 types of hair and nail supplements and use a biotin and collagen shampoo. I’m not losing much now, but I want my hair back!

Great news, Doll!

Some of the most effective things I did for my hair retention weren’t products at all. Here’s an easy routine for you to try, based on things I stopped doing, and a few small things I started, that cost close to nothing and made a big difference in the health and length of my hair.

1. Stop using hair elastics.

Once my hair got long enough for a ponytail, LISTENNNNN!!! I loved flexing my little “hang time”! For years, my go to for keeping my hair up was a hair elastic or two. What I didn’t clock for a long time was the damage happening every time I took my ponytails out. Pulling a hair elastic free from hair, especially hair that’s already fragile or shedding more than usual, doesn’t just release it. It catches. It snags. More times than I want to admit, it was breaking my ends off clean, taking length I’d worked hard to grow.

I switched to claw clips instead, no fixed grip point, nothing to tug loose at the end of the day. Same result, hair up and out of my face, with none of the damage tax on either end of wearing it.

Within a few weeks, I noticed a real drop in shedding on wash days, which was the first sign something was actually working. I order my claw clips in packs so there’s always one within reach.

Here’s what I actually buy: If you like my butterfly clips, I order two of these four piece butterfly hair claw sets so I can have matching butterflies in my hair. I order one of this 12 piece multi-size hair claw pack.

2. Move toward low manipulation styles.

Every time hair gets touched, styled, redone, or restyled, that’s an opportunity for breakage, and when your hair is already thinning, it can’t afford the extra handling. I started reaching for styles I could leave alone for a few days instead of redoing something daily. Less touching, more retention.

Yep, it’s the littlest hair claw from my 12 piece multi-size hair claw pack if you’ve ever kept a hair tie on your wrist, this is the same idea. I never leave home without a claw clip somewhere lol

3. Choose low tension styles.

Anything pulling tight at the root, whether it’s a style, an accessory, or just habit, adds stress to hair that’s already working hard enough to hold on. Loosening up, literally, gave my hairline and edges a break they clearly needed. I wouldn’t recommend a slick back bun, but something like two French braids, covered with a bonnet at night and only redone after wash day, gives you the same low manipulation benefit without the tension.

A natural hair remedy worth trying:

If you want something to add in, not just take away, a simple at home hair mask can help without adding to the budget. Mash a ripe avocado (fat and moisture) with a tablespoon of honey (a humectant, pulls moisture in) and a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil (seals it). Apply to damp hair, leave on for 20 to 30 minutes under a shower cap, then rinse and shampoo as usual. Nothing fancy, just what’s already in most kitchens.

One more thing: give it time, and actually track it.

This is the part that’s easy to skip. I’ve been on an intentional hair growth and retention journey for a full year now, and if it weren’t for photos, I’d swear nothing had changed. That’s genuinely how slow and undramatic this process is day to day. Hair regrowth and reduced shedding don’t show up overnight, and when you’re anxious about it, it’s hard to tell if anything is actually improving in the moment.

Take photos, weekly if you can, same lighting, same angle. And pay attention to the quiet stuff too. Are you shedding less around the house? Fewer strands on the pillow, in the shower drain, on your clothes? Sometimes that’s the first real sign, long before you can see it in the mirror.

Everything from today’s routine, the claw clips, and the rest of what’s on my shelf for hair retention, is collected in one place. Save this edit and refer back to it whenever you’re shopping so you’re never hunting for individual links.
