1 suspect dies, another headed to court after 2 fatal intimate partner violence cases in Montreal

One man has died and another is headed to court after two women were killed just days apart in two separate cases of suspected intimate partner violence in Montreal.

According to Montreal police, a 51-year-old man was pronounced dead in hospital Thursday. 

He was found with stab wounds to his upper body in an apartment on 9th Avenue in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough on Aug. 15. Also at the scene was the body of 44-year-old Leakkhena Seng. 

Police said the woman had been stabbed. Her death marked the 15th homicide on the island of Montreal this year.

Two days later, on Monday, a 35-year-old suspect was arrested by the Montreal police service’s major crimes unit after being found with the body of a 41-year-old woman in an apartment also in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.

The suspect is expected to appear in court Friday.

Police said the man had serious injuries when officers arrived at an apartment on 39th Street, near Paul-Corbeil Street, around 2:25 p.m., responding to a 911 call. Both the suspect and victim had signs of violence to their upper bodies that may have been caused by a sharp object, police said. 

The woman's death marked the 16th homicide on the island of Montreal this year. CBC News has since learned she was a mother with multiple children.

Police have said this is a case of intimate partner violence, but have not confirmed the man’s relation to the children or if the couple was still together.
