Five people were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a three-vehicle collision in Elgin County on Thursday evening, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of John Wise Line and Fairview Road at about 6:15 p.m.
"Sad to say, tonight ... we had a three-vehicle collision at this intersection, John Wise Line and Fairview Road," OPP Const. Jeff Beaumaster said in a video posted from the scene.
Police said a pickup truck and an SUV collided before striking a second SUV that was stopped at the intersection.
"These two vehicles collided and then struck the vehicle that was parked at the intersection," Beaumaster said, adding the first SUV was carrying five people, all of whom were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The pickup truck's three occupants were also taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The two people in the second SUV were not taken to hospital and "may have sustained very minor injuries," he said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
The intersection was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene. Roads in the area reopened early Friday morning.
