You gave me three wildflowers. Told me to throw them In the folding water As I left on the boat. We wandered upon headlands Just yesterday; Sumptuous sun illuminated gorse And blackthorn frothed like sea; Darkening, the island horizon widened, Sails slapped the wind. You climbed the edge, bold— Me lingering behind your bravery. My hand hangs over the boat’s rail Bluebells and red campion The three of them trembling above The fathomless grey; But my hand cannot let them go. So I will keep them Pressed between the pages of my travel guide.
