Carolyn Cowan · Shame... The Path Out of Hell

My name is Carolyn Cowan and I’m a trauma therapist, fascinated by shame.

In my recent videos, I’ve been exploring something very simple and very difficult:
what you do when you hate how you feel.

Procrastination sits right in the middle of this.

It can look like laziness or sound like “I’ll do it later.” It can feel like you never finish anything.

Beautiful person, procrastination isn’t just avoidance, it’s part of the shame loop. You set yourself up with a long list, or an impossible standard. You get activated. You hit shame. And then… you hit what I call the “fuck it button.”

Whatever that looks like for you.

And in that moment, you don’t resolve how you feel—you deepen it.
You give yourself another reason to feel useless, incapable, or not good enough.

So the loop continues.

What sits underneath procrastination, very often, is not feeling that you deserve better.

Deserve a clear desk.
Deserve a finished task.
Deserve the relief that comes after doing something you didn’t want to do.

And here’s the truth that can feel uncomfortable:

No one else can do it for you.

So the question becomes:

How do you choose to deserve better?

Not perfectly or all at once, but in small, quiet decisions.

Answer the email.
Clear one corner of the desk.
Open the bill.

And then notice how you feel afterwards.

Procrastination keeps you stuck in shame.

Action, however small, is a way out.

Not because you “should,”
but because you deserve to feel better.
