Carol Sutton Lewis · Ground Control Parenting

This past March, Misty Copeland thrilled us all by dancing onstage at the Oscars — eight months after the triumphant farewell performance that closed out her 25-year career with American Ballet Theatre, and less than six months after a total hip replacement.

I keep thinking about what that took. Not just the physical rebuilding, but the choice to return on her own terms, in her own time, as a mother to a four-year-old who was watching every step.

That’s the conversation we’re opening Season 8 with. And I cannot wait for you to hear it.

Misty’s Return to Ground Control Parenting

Misty Copeland first joined me on the podcast when her son Jackson was just ten months old. He’s four now, and Misty is entering a new chapter––navigating life after the stage. We have so much fun this time around! It’s a funny, honest, and refreshingly candid conversation that touches on so many parenting concepts.

We talk about:

  • How Jackson stole the show at her farewell performance ☺️

  • Rethinking self-care as something more than maintenance

  • How parenting has deepened her relationship with ambition and legacy

  • The hard work of letting our children struggle just enough to grow

One of my favorite parts of our conversation is when Misty reflects on self-care. For years, taking care of her body was part of her job as an athlete. Now she is thinking about self-care more holistically, as something that helps her feel present, grounded, and whole. This is such an important reminder for all of us. Self-care is not just something we do so we can keep going. It is a restorative process that we all need to appreciate for its own sake..

That reframe is going to shape how I think about self-care. I think it may resonate with you as well.

📺 We’re On YouTube Now!

This season, you can watch all the Ground Control Parenting podcast episodes!

Moving to video was a real undertaking, and I am really excited about this new phase of the podcast. There’s something about watching conversations unfold––sharing that look of satisfaction with my guest at a shared parenting experience, or cracking up with laughter at the same parenting disaster––that audio alone can’t quite capture.

🍎 A New Partnership: DonorsChoose

More big news: I’m thrilled to share that DonorsChoose is our new philanthropic partner this season.

DonorsChoose connects public school teachers directly with people who want to support their classrooms — funding everything from books and art supplies to instruments and technology. Thanks to DonorsChoose I’m giving every Season 8 guest, beginning with Misty, a $100 gift card to personally fund a teacher’s classroom wish list.

Supporting our children means supporting the teachers who help them learn and grow.

Thanks, as always, to Paramount for their continued sponsorship, to the Seneca Women Podcast Network for their partnership, and to DonorsChoose for joining us this season.
