If you feel like you want to dye your hair rainbow or commit to a full Gothic academia style vibe, I’m here for it but also maybe you’re just bored and you need a little change.
Here are 17 little personality updates so you don’t have to buy an exxy horse because you re-watched Saddle Club and show jumping is your new hyper fixation.
Try these instead.
Perform one tiny act of rebellion a week, use your fancy plates for breakfast or paint your nails black in summer
Refer to your lunch break as ‘interval’
Never use the big lights
Watch a movie and take notes like you have to write a report on it
Choose a word for each month of the year - open, linger, momentum, savour
Answer the phone ‘Ahoy!’ which was originally floated as the greeting of choice before ‘Hello!’ was selected
Memorise a poem
Choose an outdated word or phrase and bring it back - by Jove!
Be an expert in something absurdly specific like 1970s wallpaper or Elizabethan jewels
Plan your response to the question ‘How are you?’ with a single, descriptive word like capital, managing, vertical, tickety-boo
Start saying ‘Oh my stars!’ instead of ‘Wow!’
Choose an intolerance for a mediocrity and make it known for example leaf blowers (unessesary) or tiramisu (soggy booze cake)
Think edit, not expansion
Cut your Sunday toast differently to your weekday toast
Use a different word than ‘busy’ - at capacity, calendar-forward, in my admin arc
Upgrade your handwriting
Have a signature condiment like tabasco sauce or Everything But The Bagel Seasoning and have it on everything
Reading
Wild Dark Shore. I only just started it but everyone is utterly frothing over this book. It’s good so far. Body washes up on a beach in the Arctic kinda vibes. Isolated family has to figure out who she is.
Correction from last week - I did not enjoy Theo of Golden. It started out okay and then became a total slog. Sorry.
Watching
Call Me By Your Name. It was gorgeous. A very beautiful film, had that quality where you feel homesick for a time and era you never experienced. Armie Hammer was incredible, such a shame he sank his own career by being such horrid human. This movie could have been huge for him. Actually everyone in this film was brilliant. I also watched Phantom Thread, another charming Paul Thomas Anderson movie. I adore PTA but all his films need to be half an hour shorter. Same with Spielberg.
Listening
This Wicked Tiny Desk Concert. Love it.
Wearing
Everlane barrel legs, Alpha 60 top, Dr Marten sandals, Radical Yes bag. I wore this to Kmart* with the girls and this woman said ‘You’re so cute!’ and I assumed she was talking about my kids and I put my arm around them went ‘Oh thank you!’ and she goes. ‘No you! The outfit, the whole thing, your vibe. You’re so cute!’ which is number one on the list of most delightful things anyone has ever said to me. She was super cute too and I told her so. Cuties complimenting cuties. Love it.
*My kids ADORE Kmart. They think it’s Disneyland.
Doing
Took the kids to a local art class on the weekend which was lovely. Went for a hike with this kids on Sunday. Played cards and won. Played netball and won. Good times.
Have a rad week yeah?
