Getting out of Your Head & Into the Present

“Confidence isn’t knowing that nothing will go wrong, it’s knowing that you’ll be able to cope if it does”

I’m a therapist, so you can imagine how many people I have asked “How would it help you to overthink less?”. Hundreds & Hundreds.

Each time, I hear a similar line.

“I feel like I’m missing out on my life”.

When someone reaches the point where they recognise that overthinking is costing them precious time, experiences, and opportunities - understandably, they're ready to start making a change

GETTING HOOKED

Overthinking has a way of hooking us and pulling us away from the present moment.

  • You replay conversations

  • Analyse text messages

  • Question decisions

  • Worry about future outcomes that may never happen

Your body is here, but your mind and ‘you’ (the REAL YOU) is somewhere else entirely.

OVERTHINKING LOOKS LIKE…

Imagine sitting with loved ones while only thinking about tomorrow’s problems.

Or walking through beautiful places while worrying about next month.

Or being on a date while thinking about how your ex betrayed you

What moments get interrupted by your Overthinking?

One reason overthinking is difficult to let go of is that it often feels helpful - Beneath the endless thinking is usually a desire to feel safe, avoid rejection, prevent failure, or gain certainty over uncertainty.

Ultimately, overcoming overthinking is about learning to trust yourself and becoming comfortable with life’s curve balls, rather than constantly trying to anticipate, control, fix, or undo them.

I have to ask… If you weren’t spending so much time in your head, what would you be doing more of?

Your answer may reveal where your attention belongs.

Here are Four Psychological Principles for Living More in the Moment

1. Not Every Thought Deserves Engagement

Thoughts can exist without being analysed, answered, or solved. One of the most powerful skills you can develop is learning to notice a thought without automatically following it or trying to fix things. Just because your mind generates a worry or a memory doesn’t mean it requires your attention.

2. Understand the Function of Overthinking

Overthinking is often an attempt to avoid uncertainty, rejection, failure, or discomfort. When you understand what your mind is trying to protect you from, you can start addressing the real issue rather than getting trapped in endless analysis. We can communicate with our anxiety and understand it - that is possible!

3. Redirect Your Attention Back to Life

Once you’re activated, your attention turns inward and gets caught in the triggers, the concerns, and the automatic reactions. Instead of engaging with facts and life, you become absorbed in the trigger. You need to be recognising when attention has been hooked into these patterns and gently bringing your attention back. You return to what is important to you - conversation, environment, purpose, connection.

4. Build Trust in Yourself

The more you trust your ability to handle discomfort, uncertainty, and setbacks, the less you’ll rely on overthinking or others to feel safe. Confidence isn’t knowing that nothing will go wrong, it’s knowing that you’ll be able to cope if it does.

Finally…

The goal isn’t to eliminate every anxious thought or stop your mind from wandering. The goal is to spend less time trapped in mental loops and more time engaged with the life that’s happening right now.

Presence is not something you achieve once and keep forever. It’s a practice of gently returning your attention to this moment, this conversation, this experience, and this day - over and over.

The irony is that many people spend years worrying about the future, when the future is built by how we spend the present.

So if overthinking has been pulling you away from the life you want, start small. Notice where your attention is going. Challenge the urge to analyse everything. Trust yourself a little more than your fears. And take one step towards the life you’d be living if your mind wasn’t constantly holding you back.

Because this is not a rehearsal, life is happening right now.
