The Holy Spirit Is a Person

Devotion for Wednesday, August 5

This devotion was written before my sabbatical began. Thank you for remembering me in prayer and asking the Lord to grant times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

John 14:16–17
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever... He remains with you and will be in you.”

Many Christians speak about Holy Spirit as though He were an invisible force that occasionally appears during worship or dramatic moments of prayer. Jesus described Him very differently. He consistently referred to Holy Spirit as “He,” not “it.” The Helper is not merely power to experience or an atmosphere to create. He is the third Person of the Trinity who teaches, comforts, guides, convicts, and speaks to God’s people.

Seeing Holy Spirit as a Person changes the way we approach our relationship with God. People do not build friendships by chasing experiences. They build relationships through conversation, trust, attentiveness, and time together. In the same way, growing in awareness of Holy Spirit begins with recognizing that He is present and desires fellowship with us throughout the ordinary moments of life.

Many believers spend their spiritual lives waiting for extraordinary encounters while overlooking God’s quiet work in everyday faithfulness. Holy Spirit often speaks through Scripture, gentle conviction, wisdom, peace, and simple acts of obedience. As we become more attentive to Him, we discover that He has been faithfully present all along.

Reflection:
Spend five uninterrupted minutes today talking with Holy Spirit as you would with someone walking beside you. Then sit quietly with an open Bible and ask Him to teach you something about Christ as you read.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Helper who remains with me forever. Teach me to know You as the living Person Jesus promised, not merely as an experience to pursue. Open my heart to hear Your voice through Your Word, and help me walk with You in simple faithfulness today. Amen.
