God Has Not Left You

Devotion for Tuesday, August 4

As you read today’s devotion, I am away on sabbatical. This was written before I left, and I would appreciate your prayers for times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

John 14:18
“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.”

Fear often convinces us that God has stepped away when life becomes difficult. Seasons of disappointment, unanswered prayers, or personal failure can leave us wondering if His presence has somehow diminished. Jesus anticipated that fear long before His disciples experienced it. As He prepared them for His departure, He did not promise an easier life. He promised that they would never be abandoned. The gift of Holy Spirit was God’s answer to the deepest fear of the human heart: being left alone.

The word “orphan” carries far more weight than simply being alone. An orphan has lost belonging, security, identity, and covering. Jesus chose that word intentionally because He knew His followers would be tempted to believe they had been forgotten. Instead, He assured them that Holy Spirit would remain with them forever. The same God who walked with them in the person of Christ would now dwell within them through the Spirit.

Many believers measure God’s nearness by their emotions. On days when they feel encouraged, they assume God is close. On days when they struggle, they assume He has withdrawn. The promise of Jesus rests on something far more dependable than feelings. Holy Spirit remains with God’s people whether life feels peaceful or chaotic. His presence is anchored in Christ’s promise, not our emotional state.

Reflection:
Think about an area of your life where you have quietly wondered if God has forgotten you. Write that concern in a journal or on a piece of paper, then read John 14:18 aloud and thank the Lord that His promise is more reliable than your feelings.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for promising that You would not leave me as an orphan. Because of Your gift of Holy Spirit, I never walk through life alone. Help me trust Your promise when my emotions tell a different story, and remind me today that Your presence is constant and faithful. Amen.
