Devotion for Saturday, August 1

As you read today's devotion, I am away on sabbatical. Please continue to pray that the Lord would give me times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:1

“Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.”

Spiritual gifts are developed long before they are desperately needed. Athletes do not wait until the championship to begin training, and musicians do not learn their instruments on the day of the performance. In the same way, God prepares His people through ordinary, everyday faithfulness. Prayer, encouragement, generosity, discernment, teaching, and acts of compassion all grow stronger as they are practiced. The moments that seem small today are preparing you for opportunities you cannot yet see.

Faithfulness in hidden places builds confidence for public moments of ministry. Many believers wonder how they will know if God has given them a particular gift, but Scripture points us toward pursuit rather than hesitation. We discover God’s work in our lives by stepping out in faith. Every prayer you offer, every person you encourage, and every opportunity you take to serve allows Holy Spirit to shape and strengthen the gifts He has placed within you. Growth comes through obedience, not through waiting until you feel completely prepared.

God has already entrusted you with something that can bless another person. Do not compare your gift to someone else’s or wait for the perfect opportunity. Offer what you have with humility and love, trusting that God will multiply your faithfulness for His purposes. As you continue to pursue Him, you will find that the gifts He has given become more effective and more fruitful over time.

Reflection:
What gift or opportunity has God been prompting you to develop? Take one intentional step today to exercise that gift, even if it feels small. Trust that God uses faithful practice to prepare you for greater opportunities.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for giving every believer a place in Your work. Help me pursue love and faithfully develop the gifts You have entrusted to me. As I step out in obedience, strengthen what You have placed within me so that others may be encouraged and You may be glorified. Amen.
