Following the Next Step

Devotion for Wednesday, July 22, 2026

While you are reading today’s devotion, I am on sabbatical. Thank you for praying that I would experience times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

Hebrews 11:8
“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he left, not knowing where he was going.”

Faith is revealed by obedience before certainty. Abraham did not wait until every question had been answered before taking his first step. He trusted God’s character more than his own understanding. That same pattern appears throughout Scripture as God invites His people to follow Him one faithful step at a time.

God often reveals His purposes progressively because relationship requires trust. If every detail were provided in advance, very little faith would be required. Walking with God means learning that His presence is more dependable than our plans. Every act of obedience becomes another opportunity to discover His faithfulness.

Today’s challenge is to practice complete obedience with partial instruction. Think about the last clear prompting God placed on your heart, whether through Scripture or conviction, and act on it today instead of waiting for more information.

What is one step of obedience you have been postponing because you wanted more certainty? Commit to taking that step today and trust God with everything that comes after it.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling Abraham to walk by faith and for faithfully leading him every step of the journey. Give me the courage to obey what You have already shown me and help me trust You with the steps I cannot yet see. Amen.
