Carla Birnberg · CARLA BIRNBERG | The Consistency Advantage

This week I had the unusual experience of seeing my own life through someone else’s eyes.

A thoughtful writer and new friend, Nava, interviewed me for her Substack, In Defense of Generalism. Reading our conversation from the other side was fascinating. It reminded me that sometimes the clearest view we get of our own work comes when someone else reflects it back to us.

One thought kept surfacing:

Consistency is how we stay in conversation with every version of ourselves.

The version of us who started.

The version of us who wanted to quit.

The version of us we’re becoming.

Without consistency, those versions become strangers.

With consistency, they become collaborators.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I’ve never believed consistency was about doing the same thing over and over. It’s always been about returning: to our values, our purpose, and the direction we’ve chosen.

Perhaps this is another way of describing that same idea. Consistency is what keeps us connected to the person we're becoming.

If you’ve ever looked at your résumé, your relationships, or your life and wondered how those seemingly unrelated pieces fit together, I think you’ll enjoy our conversation.
